Andy, it's CLI that's generating the "invalid user" error.
Samar, maybe something got corrupted during the initial boot up and set up of the virtual machine. Try resetting it from the original file you downloaded. Alternatively, maybe something is corrupted in the Eval image itself, in which case I'm out of ideas ... I was hoping different eval versions would be available, but there seems to be only 20.2.

Not really my area of expertise, but it seems as though the prompt is still in the SHELL, rather than the CLI, since I would never expect CLI (mgd) to display "/bin/sh: configure: not found".
If you type "cli" does that take you into the CLI? From there you might then be able to run "configure", set root authentication etc.?
Regards.

Hello Nikolay ,
Apologies for the delayed response.
1) I have downloaded the image from Juniper Website only (https://support.juniper.net/support/downloads/?p=vsrxeval).
2) I tried to recover the password. I choose the option Recovery Mode (CLI Mode). However. it gives me an error "Invalid User" :-(. Screenshot attached.
I am not sure where I am missing. If you have some suggestion where I can get the image, I will be very happy to give it a try.
Regards,

Very strange, indeed. Two possibilities come to mind, noth unlikely: 1) you have a somehow non-default image where the root password has been configured already, or 2) somehow the system is reading an extra character when you press Enter for the password and it somehow thinks you're entering some password instead of leaving it blank.
Either way, this is a good opportunity for a password recovery exercise! Reference: https://www.juniper.net/documentation/us/en/software/vsrx/vsrx-consolidated-deployment-guide/vsrx-kvm/topics/task/security-vsrx-kvm-root-password-recovery.html

Thanks Nikolay,
I am using root as the username. As per the instructions it has no password. However, it still asks for it. On pressing "Enter" it just complains login incorrect. (Screenshot attached!)

Just to double-check, what username did you use?

Subject: vsrx evaluation Login Password in GNS3
Dear All,
I am intending to use vsrx evaluation for the education purpose. I have added the same in GNS3 running on VMWare Workstation. However, the appliance asks for the login password. Though as per the instruction there is no password for the same.
Can you help me how to login to the appliance and configure? Is there a password to login ?
Regards,
Samar
