  • 1.  Upgrade path for QFX

    Posted 02-01-2024 11:52

    Hi,

I have a Juniper QFX3500 that is currently running a very old version of JunOS and I need to upgrade it urgently to the latest. Here is what it is currently utilising:

    Model: qfx3500s
    JUNOS Base OS boot [12.1X49-D1.2]
JUNOS Base OS Software Suite [12.1X49-D1.2]
    JUNOS Kernel Software Suite [12.1X49-D1.2]
    JUNOS Crypto Software Suite [12.1X49-D1.2]
    JUNOS Online Documentation [12.1X49-D1.2]
    JUNOS Enterprise Software Suite [12.1X49-D1.2]
JUNOS Packet Forwarding Engine Support (QFX) [12.1X49-D1.2]
    JUNOS Routing Software Suite [12.1X49

Could someone let me know the upgrade path and who I should communicate with tp get the actual JunOS versions required?

    Many thanks

Check the detailed outline of the end of life process from Junos 12x in this thread here.  There are lots of detail and supporting documentation.

    https://community.juniper.net/discussion/junos-upgrade-faqs-and-junos-eos-enforcement-notification-for-12x-14x-15x-and-16x

    The outline version is:

Review the recommended version per your QFX platform and choose the target final version

Note from these release notes the maximum required jumps to develop your specific jump path

Download necessary versions from the support site.  If older versions that currently publicly posted are needed open a support ticket to get the files.

    Hi Steve,

Fantastic response as always. Much appreciated.

Unfortunatly, there isn't even a QFX3500 in the list. I also checked end of support which was 2021. Maybe if I explained the issue you could suggest a way I could do this without the need to upgrade.

I just have two ports coming into the QFX from 2 fortinets. The customer wants the Gateway for these two devices to be on the QFX but only one available address. In the lab with a later version of OS I simply created an IRB and it all worked fantastic. However, it appears with either the version of OS or maybe the QFX3500 itself, there is no IRB option, only a VLAN address and I cannot use that. The only temp way around it I could get was an aggregated ethernet, but this will not work for their final cluster.

Is there a way I can get an L3 interface on this version of OS that would suffice as the Gateway for the Subnet (/29) that is not IRB and actually routes. Like I said, I have tried the VLAN method and it just would not work at all. Maybe you could think of a method?

    Many thanks Steve

The place to check for feature support and final platform Junos version is Feature Explorer.

Here we see that for the QFX3500 you last release version is Junos 15.1R7

    https://apps.juniper.net/feature-explorer/select-platform.html?typ=1&category=Switching&pid=31703500&platform=QFX3500&swtab=Junos%20OS

Since the platform is no longer on the downloads site a ticket would need to be opened to get the files and release notes to confirm the upgrade jump steps.

As for the interfaces, the same link selecting latest junos version allows to drill into features.  There was a change in vlan configuration a few years ago when IRB interfaces were introduced.    Prior to that the interfaces were called RVI and configured as vlan.0 etc.

    https://apps.juniper.net/feature-explorer/feature-info.html?fKey=1236&fn=Routed%20VLAN%20interfaces%20(RVIs)

These are configured in a similar way to irb interfaces.

    • IP address to the desired unit
    • The vlan.0 or other unit number added to the vlan configuration as the layer 3 interface
