The Juniper support group has a recommendation KB here.
https://supportportal.juniper.net/s/article/Junos-Software-Versions-Suggested-Releases-to-Consider-and-Evaluate?language=en_US#srx_series
Currently the SRX1500 is listed as recommending Junos 21.2R3-S4
For the upgrade process you need to review the target version release notes for the specifics of the upgrade process. In generally, you can jump directly either 3 or 4 major versions of Junos (the number before the period). But details and caveats per platform and specific version exceptions are called out in release notes of final target version.
When the jump is too great you have two options:
1-Make multiple ugrades to the necessary intermediate version
2-Do a format install of the new version (you need local access for this process)
A- export the current configuration and save off the device
B- make a bootable USB on the device and add the new version install file to the /var/tmp folder of the usb image
C- boot to the usb image
D-run a format install of Junos new version to the internal drive
E-boot to the new image
F-load and commit the saved configuration
