  • 1.  JunOS not booting + weird behavior

    Posted 08-29-2013 06:18

    Hello community,

I currently have a SRX100h appliance which is unable to boot from primary JunOS partition and showing unexpected behavior while trying to bring it back to life (I feel myself like a necromancer already). I am uncertain what actions have caused such state of things, but as far as I know - the last person that messed around with it (it was still in fully-operational state) tried to restore factory-default settings with "request system zeroize media" which resulted in current state of things.

Please observe the following log. It begins after manually booting from second partition and initiating a "request system snapshot slice alternate" command, hoping to get JunOS image on primary partition up and running again, followed by "request system reboot".

I have marked questionable places with bold, so If you can - please explain to me why the unit is behaving that way. Any suggestions/thoughts/solutions are greatly appreciated!

Edit: it does not seems to let use bold inside a "code" tag, so I've separated reboots by a bunch of blank lines.

Edit2: For the sake of simplicity I've marked questionable rows with blank lines and a bunch of space preceeding the message.

Edit3: Added "fdisk /dev/da0" command output.

    Hi

best to stop the boot process and load an image via tftp or USB.

then use the slice command to copy to backup and you should be ok.

Thank you for your reply, WPJ74.

I did already got to that point and have opened a case regarding getting one specific Junos OS version from Juniper Tech Support team. I will be trying reinstall when I get my hands on the correct software version.

Meanwhile I would greatly appriciate If anyone could tell me what is possibly causing those weird errors I am getting. That would help me to understand the root cause, prevent such things from happening again in the future and give me a clue on how to get the unit working again with minimum efforts required (our company have most of those units located in remote areas).

    My questions are:

    • Why I am getting an "ERROR: internal is 512MB, must be at least 512MB" error and shortly after that the device arbitrarily zeroizing the partition with a new snapshot of a working system?
    • Why the device is unable to boot automatically from the second slice, where the backup copy of the Junos OS resides, but does boot correctly after specifying that exact partition in loader prompt with "set currdev=disk0s2" command?
    • Why the device tries to mount root from "cd9660:/dev/md0" while booting on its own from second slice and mounts root from "ufs:/dev/da0s2a" after telling it to do so with "set currdev=disk0s2" command in loader?

I came out with the following sequence, that helped me:

    1. Boot manually from working system on second slice with "set currdev=disk0s2" and "boot" commands in loader

    2a. Disable clustering if present

2b. Specify network options (address, mask, routes, etc)

    2c. Reboot the device

    3. Upload Junos OS image in "tgz" format via SCP to some location on the device (in my case that was "/cf/var/")

    4. Install uploaded image to the alternate slice with "request system software add no-copy /cf/var/<image_file_name>.tgz reboot"

    5. Boot manually from the slice with freshly installed image with commands similar to those specified in step 1

    6. Repeat step 4

    7. Delete uploaded image

    8. ..profit!

However, the questions listed in my previous message are still bothering me, If anyone can answer them - I would be eternally grateful.
