  • 1.  VLAN-REWRITE / Translation on EX-Series

    Posted 12-09-2014 04:49

    Dear all.

I need to rewrite VLAN-IDs on a ge-* interface on an EX-Switch for ingress and egress.
The "Tech Library" describes a features called vlan-rewrite. This should be supported also for EX-Series.
    http://www.juniper.net/techpubs/en_US/junos13.2/topics/reference/configuration-statement/vlan-rewrite-edit-interfaces.html
    https://www.juniper.net/documentation/en_US/junos12.3/topics/example/layer-2-bulk-configuration-example-vlan-translation-with-lists-example-mx-solutions.html

Checking the CLI on my EX device, I can not find any matching command. JunOS does not have any of the required commands like "vlan-rewrite" "vlan-id-list" or "translate".
Does anyone have experiance with vlan-rewrite or vlan translation on EX-Series?

    thanks for your help
    regards
    Alexander

The feature documenation pages you link to show only support on the MX platform.

Searching feature explorer shows likewise that the feature is only supported on M, MX and T series devices.

Q-in-Q with rewrite is supported on EX if that would be a design option for you.

    Hi Steve.

    thanks for your fast reply.

I also checked the CLI Explorer and it says that also EX-Series support vlan-rewrite. This is confusing.

And the TechLibrary says that this statement was introduced in 12.3R2 for EX Series switches.

    http://www.juniper.net/techpubs/en_US/junos13.2/topics/reference/configuration-statement/vlan-rewrite-edit-interfaces.html

Q-in-Q does not help here, because I need a L2 communication between the "old" and "new" vlans.

    Thanks and regards

    Are you running the EX9200?

That documenation link seems to be platform specific when I change the version to 12.3 the noted release version for the EX support.

I think your original observation is correct.  If the commands are not showing in your auto-complete then the platform/version combination you are on does not have support for the command.

    Hi Steve.

I have a EX4200 here. In my production network it will be a ex8200.

I will check if there is a hardware relation to this features but this would be annoying.

    regards

Let us know what you find out.  Based on this page I think it is platform specific.

The EX4200 should support a 1:1 VLAN translation:

    http://kb.juniper.net/InfoCenter/index?page=content&id=KB16755&smlogin=true

I checked on some EX4200s in our lab running 12.3 and the commands are in there.  It's not as feature-rich as the other platforms, but if all you need is swapping, then it should work for you.

    Hi evt, hi Steve.

thanks for your help. I got it running on EX 4200 finaly.

KB16755 says that EX translate only incoming packets, but it also rewrite the vlan IDs outgoing without additional config. So I only need to rewrite at one side. This is a little confusing.

    Here my setup
