The path that you have rightly mentioned is the standard upgrade path based on the release notes. However, after testing in our lab, in most cases, a direct/2-step upgrade is also possible. It will certainly reduce the number of intermediate hops to get to the desired target version. The upgrades tested in the lab are performed with baseline configuration and no line cards. We recommended customers test the upgrades in their lab with the complete configuration before performing the upgrade in production. Also, ensuring all the hardware components are compatible with the recommended target release.

This is good to know. I was told that Junos should only be upgraded in 1 main version at a time. like this... (actually I previously understood that Junos could/should only skip 2 sub-releases at a time, but since then, I've been told that you can go from one main version to the next main version)
19.4 - if you are here
20.1 - you can skip
20.2 - you can skip
20.3 - you can skip
20.4 - upgrade
21.1 - you can skip
21.2 - you can skip
21.3 - you can skip
21.4 - upgrade
...like that. But you mentioned you could go from 15.1X49-D170.4 > 19.4R3 > 22.3R1.9 > 22.4R2.... so that's a lot faster to get where you want to go.

Subject: Upgrading JunOS 15.1X49 to 19.4R3-S3
Hello Fred,
The shortest upgrade path from 15.1X49 to 22.4R2 for SRX which is tested in Juniper lab is:
15.1X49-D170.4 > 19.4R3 > 22.3R1.9 > 22.4R2
Note:
The tests were performed with baseline configuration and no line cards.
We suggest using the no-validate option while performing upgrades. Please ensure to install the OS packages wherever applicable.
It is recommended to test the upgrade in the lab with the complete configuration before performing in production. Ensure all the hardware components are compatible with the recommended target release.

Understood and yes, I meant upgrading software
directly to a newer version.

Understood and thank you for that as well.
Our devices are on version 15.1X49-D170.4 of
the JunOS.
According to the doc I found, I need to
-upgrade first to 19.4R3-S1.3 and then
to 20.4R3 and then to 21.2R,
and finally to 22.4R2-S2.6
(without loosing config)
or
-upgrade via booting directly from
22.4R2-S2.6 (and loose config)
I can do both, but would prefer to go
with the former as I can do it remotely
(we have quite a few sites).
Again thank you for all your info.
Cheers,

Hello Fred,
Regarding fresh installing Junos without an upgrade, you can perform a USB upgrade to directly move to a newer version. Please note that the USB upgrade will wipe out the existing configuration.
The keyword "install" used in https://www.juniper.net/documentation/us/en/software/junos/junos-install-upgrade/topics/topic-map/install-software-on-srx.html does not imply a fresh install (which I assume you mean upgrade software directly to a newer version).
A Juniper Networks device is delivered with Junos OS preinstalled. When it is powered on, it starts (boots) using the installed software. As new features and software fixes become available, you must upgrade your software to use them.
Upgrading the version of the operating system on a device is done by copying a software installation package to the device or other system on your local network and then using the CLI to install the new software on the device. You then reboot the device, which boots from the newly installed software.
To summarise, you can directly move to a newer release by performing a USB upgrade or if you can share the current version the devices are on, the target version that you plan to upgrade to and platform details I can help you with the shortest upgrade path possible which is tested in our labs.

Hi AkanKsha,
Thank you for your prompt answer.
>19.4R3-S3 version is not available for download on the Juniper Software Download page.
>JTAC should be able to help you with the required image.
>Please get in touch with JTAC for the download link to the 19.4R3-S3 version.
Understood. Will do that.
At the same time, do you know if there is a way of installing
JunOS, like a fresh install, without upgrading?
I am asking that because that would allow us to upgrade
our software directly to a newer version.
I saw those manual pages below where they use the word
"install" and not "upgrade" but did not understand
if that means a fresh install or something else:
<https://www.juniper.net/documentation/us/en/software/junos/junos-install-upgrade/topics/topic-map/install-software-on-srx.html>
Again thank you for your answer!

Subject: Upgrading JunOS 15.1X49 to 19.4R3-S3
Hi All,
I am trying to upgrade our SRXs from
version 15.1X49-D170.4
to version 19.4R3-S3
as it seems to be the recommended upgrade path
from Juniper.net:
<https://www.juniper.net/documentation/us/en/software/junos/srx-upgrade/topics/concept/upgrade-paths.html>
The problem is I cannot download version 19.4R3-S3
from Juniper site, as the older version currently
is 20.2.
What should I do in this case?
Should I use 20.2 version and trying to boot
via USB directly or is there another safer
way to perform an upgrade?
Looking forward to hearing from you.
Cheers!
