  • 1.  SSID for WiFi Configured through MIST and users don't get IP from DHCP server

    Hi Everyone,

I was trying to add a new SSID to my LAN and all is well, but the users don't get IP address from my DHCP, which is based on windows. All configurations are fine as the switches have the VLAN and the default gateway for the DHCP scope is the interface on the core switch, which has the same VLAN, but something in the middle is missing so that the DHCP requests don't pass to the server.

Any suggestions on where to start to track down this issue? Via MIST, how can I see if the device connected to that SSID is able to reach the DHCP server and get requests?

    Thanks

Hi,  You probably didn't set that SSID to be tagged with the correct VLAN.  Look at the attached document.  Go to "Finish the AP Configuration - WLAN  Configurations", step 15.  To quickly rule out your DHCP configuration, create an access port on the same switch the AP is connected to with the VLAN you want to test and see if your laptop can get an IP from that DHCP pool.

Another thought is that your AP is plugged into an access port and not a trunk port.  If a trunk port, is it allowing for the VLAN your SSID is tied to?

sounds very much like a VLAN or DHCP relay issue somewhere in the path. Since it's a new SSID, I'd first double-check that the SSID is correctly mapped to the right VLAN in Mist, and that this VLAN is allowed on all trunk ports between the AP and the core switch. If one trunk is missing that VLAN tag, DHCP requests won't reach the server. Also make sure the DHCP relay (IP helper) is configured on the core interface for that VLAN and pointing to your Windows DHCP server. Without that, clients in a different subnet won't get an IP. In Mist, you can check the client details to see if it's stuck in "DHCP Discover" that usually confirms the request isn't being answered. Most of the time, it turns out to be tagging or a missing helper address.
