Note that there are two CF slots on the SRX650 SRE - internal (on the SRE board) and external (the face plate of the SRE).
The USB does work, I can boot it from a USB as the instructions describe and interrupting the boot, but changing the external flag doesn't seem to help the box register there's a CF in the external slot. In theory I should then be able to do a "request system snapshot media external" which would save to the external CF.

Hey Mate,
The SRX650 is a bit of a difficult one. I'm not sure that the USB works as the documentation only refers to a compact flash card and USB operations do not work.
Have you tried the "request system snapshot media usb" command? The 'external' flag may be referring to the original CF cards.

Subject: SRX650 - booting from 4GB external compactflash
Hey folks,
Running JUNOS 11.4R12, I'm attempting to use a 4GB CompactFlash card in an SRX650, while I recognise the documentation indicates a 2GB should be used, they are proving hard to source locally where I am.
Following along the document here Backing Up an Installation Using Snapshots (Junos OS) | Junos OS | Juniper Networks for the SRX650 and booting off USB, enabling external CF in u-boot, the SRX seems to identify there is a CF there but thinks there is no space on it:
Routing Engine REV 18 750-xxxx yyyyy RE-SRXSME-SRE6
ad1 0 MB
> request system snapshot media external partition
error: external (/dev/ad1) is too small. Size must be atleast 1GB
Have tried a few variations on formatting the 4GB CF, formatted with 4 & 2GB (FAT) partitions using windows diskpart.
Has anyone had success in a similar scenario, or have any suggestions on other things to try here?
Thanks in advance.
