At this moment your mention of empty BGP update might help me. Best way I found to make BGP roll is with virtual router and a vrf. That and export policy statement xxxxL:xxxx . But I'm not sure I want the BGP route present at all. I don't use BGP at all, at present.

If my memory serves me correct ( which I highly doubt it) only if BGP router has an update to send and at the same time it is time to send keep alive, then router suppresses keepalive and sends BP update instead. I have never seen empty BGP update so I was curious :)

We can see there is no NLRI, no BGP attributes, it is just plain empty. What is the purpose of such update?
