  • 1.  Junos OS for Virtual Machine labs

    Posted 10-06-2023 19:17

    Hi Techies,

I am new to the Junos environment and currently engaged in the Juniper free trainings.
I want to build a VM where is can spin some routers and switches to get my hands dirty with the network devices, please where can I get the images to run on my VM or can anyone share with me.

    Thanks

A good overview of how to setup a virtual lab with the download links on EVE NG is here

Steve's link to Christian's info is the way to go, with two caveats.

    1) vMX is no longer available. Most folks are using vSRX in packet mode in plave of vMX.

    2) vQFX is very difficult to get stable, so I recommend you go with vJunos-switch or vJunosEvolved instead for switching.  You can download those here:
    https://www.juniper.net/us/en/dm/vjunos-labs.html

Regarding labbing, the difference between the two switching VMs is vJunos-switch does not support nested virtualization, so you'd need to install it in Eve on bare metal. It will not run in Eve running as a VM in ESXi. I run Eve as a vm in ESXi, so I'm working on installing vJunosEvolved in my homelab. Here is some info you'll need to create the required templates:
    https://community.juniper.net/blogs/shalini-mukherjee/2023/05/11/deploying-vjunos-in-a-bare-metal-eve-ng-server
Scroll down to the section "Deploying vJunos-switch and vJunosEvolved in EVE-NG."

Hope this helps! I'm in the process of doing the same in my homelab, so I'll report back with any issues or updates I run into to.

If you get frustrated with building this out ion your homelab and want to quickly spin up free Juniper resources, you can book 6 hour labbing windows here:

    Happy labbing!

    Hi,

The disadvantage of vJunos-switch or vJunosEvolved it still dont have startup config if want to spin up in EVE/PNET. Hopefully someone can create startup-config script same as vMX and VSRX.

    Thanks

Can you elaborate on what you mean by "startup config script?" In every lab I have ever built or worked in, the "new" devices startup in a pristine state, with no config on them.

    Hi,

The  vJunos-switch or vJunosEvolved is too sensitive. If have power trip then all the config in there will be lost. But in vQFX it support startup-config feature. U can check on EVE / PNET that feature. Hope someone that expert in .yml can do startup-config save same as vMX and vQFX.

    Thanks

Ah, I think I understand now. You are unable to save the config you create on vjunos switch/evolved, correct?

    Hi,

Yes...If  previously u have try EVE/PNET then u can see on vMX-VCP it have "config_vmxvcp.py" script. This script will use to make startup config or save the config that we have done. So in case the server has power trip then the config will not lost because we can make it as startup-config. Until now still nobody can make this kind of script for vJunos-switch or vJunosEvolved. So thats one of the reason i'm still stick using vQFX.

    Thanks

Ok, got it. I'll lab this up once I get vJunosEvolved running in my instance of Eve and let you know what I find.

    Hi Andy,

Explanation that "export config" can be found in EVE community cookbook page 98. Btw can u check internally the person that develop vSRX 3.0 that using version 22.4 what his make changes because starting from that version the existing "config-script" no longer work in EVE/PNET.

    Thanks
