    Hello,

    I am trying to install junos 20.1R1 for mx80 but there are two section.
    Install media and install package? Which one I should use to format the disk and install fresh junos?

    Hi fiber9, 

     

    Yes, as per my understanding if you are using the USB, go for the media image. If this is via cli then package image could be used. The Media keyword is only used when the image is not for use with the request system software add command. Values for the media keyword include the following:

    • usb for images installed from a USB drive
    • net for images installed from the loader prompt

    Hello Fiber9,

    Greetings !!

     

    The install-media-* is what is required to build a PCMCIA/CF/USB that can be used to completely reformat a RE and return it to a factory default state.  This image is a complete media image, therefore it has to be 'installed' onto the external card using the 'dd' command exactly as described on the webpage from which you download it.

     

    The jinstall-* and the jbundle-* are software upgrade packages.  The jinstall-* invokes a slightly more complete upgrade process, which is sometimes useful/required when upgrading between major versions (e.g. where the underlying kernel is upgraded, too).  In general, I use the jinstall-* anyway because it is cleaner (the jbundle-* can invoke a slightly lighter - less intrusive - upgrade process, which should be fine for minor upgrades).

    If I am understanding your question right, you would like to know the difference between a jinstall media package and a generic jinstall OS package.

     

    Install media usually needs USB to perform the upgrade. Procedure below:

    The generic install packages perform upgrades without the need of USB directly from the CLI

    There are majorly 2 types of Upgrade process- USB upgrade and CLI upgrade.

     

    Generally, instal-media packages are used during a USB upgrade.

    The normal packages are used during the Non-USB upgrade[CLI] by copying the file to the local directory of the device usually with the help of FTP.

    Let us know which type of upgrade you are planning to peroform? Now, you can also decide which type of package you can use for the upgrade.
