Inline Flow Performance Monitoring complements BFD in measuring "peer paths" between two SSR devices. It does it by through the inclusion of a small amount of metadata by the initiating router to a sample of packets (how often the sampling occurs is configurable), which is deciphered and reported back by the recipient router. The advantage of FPM data is that it's organized by
traffic-class (high/medium/low/best-effort). This gives more granular data on the performance of a link -- not just through synthetic traffic (BFD) but by piggybacking onto actual user traffic.
The configuration is very simple:

marking-count) are marked during a given time window (

- I95-32558 In-line Flow Performance Monitoring: Inline performance metrics have been enhanced to achieve a finer granularity than what is currently available via BFD. Statistics are now collected per path, traffic class, and protocol (TCP or UDP) level. Sessions can be forwarded using more granular SLA metrics.
