Junos allows the configuration of interfaces not present. This helps in preparing for adding cards or VC members.
But it also means when removing the card or VC member the interface based configurations also need to be manually deleted.

Subject: EX4300 Virtual Chassis Question
Just reduced a 7 switch EX4300-MP VC to a 3 switch config. Turned the four switches off, deleted the four member IDs, removed them from the pre-provisioned list of the config, then rebooted the new VC. Everything seems to look fine for members 0-2, but the configuration still shows all of the interfaces from switches 3-6. Don't those interfaces go away after the configuration change, or do they have to be removed physically from the config then committed? Or did I miss a step? Thanks
