  • 1.  Question on 2-step commit process

    Hi.

    https://www.juniper.net/documentation/us/en/software/junos/cli/topics/topic-map/junos-configuration-commit.html#id-commit-preparation-and-activation-overview

The above Juniper documentation says that the two step commit process (commit prepare & commit activate) "enables you to configure several devices and simultaneously activate the configurations".

I do not understand how this is possible. Wouldn't you still have to go to each device and type 'commit activate'. That's not 'simultaneous', is it?.

Can somebody please explain how the two-step commit process enables simultaneous configuration?

    Thanks,

    Deepak

The contrast is about devices where commands are immediately activated as soon as entered.

With the Junos commit system you can stage configuration on multiple devices that has no effect.

Before applying the configuration you can run a commit check operation that will validate but not apply (step 1) to be sure all is ready

Then run the commit process on the device groups at about the same time so the configurations all come online about the same time

Finally, you also have the commit confirmed option to auto rollback in a specified time period in case the new configuration causes a connectivity issue.
