  • 1.  EX2300 virtual chassis cannot change mode to mixed

    Posted 02-13-2023 02:37

    Hi everyone.

I added new switch to VC and on this switch I cant change mode- in this chassis I have two type of switch  ex2300-24t  and  ex2300-24p

Member ID  Status   Serial No    Model          prio  Role      Mode  Mode ID  Interface
    0 (FPC 0)  Prsnt    JZ3622130013 ex2300-24t     129   Backup       Y  VC   2  vcp-255/1/0
    1 (FPC 1)  Prsnt    JY3622320543 ex2300-24p     129   Master*      Y  VC   2  vcp-255/1/0
    2 (FPC 2)  Inactive JY0219230488 ex2300-24p       0   Linecard     N  VC   0  vcp-255/1/0

new switch is inactive - mixed mode N

After command  : request virtual-chassis mode mixed member 2 reboot - Switch reboot, but mode stay - similar devices.

Switch was used as standalone before, cleared to default with "request system zeroize"

Do I have issue with license now?  do I need load license again? Or the issue is somewhere else?

    Thanks for an answer.

    From your active RE

    switch>  request session member 2

If your able to connect you will get
warning: This chassis is operating in a non-master role as part of a virtual-chassis (VC) system.
warning: Use of interactive commands should be limited to debugging and VC Port operations.
warning: Full CLI access is provided by the Virtual Chassis Master (VC-M) chassis.
warning: The VC-M can be identified through the show virtual-chassis status command executed at this console.
warning: Please logout and log into the VC-M to use CLI.
    {linecard:2}

switch> request virtual-chassis mode mixed reboot

If that did not make a session you need to console directly into member 2

Why are you using mixed mode anyway? I was under the impression that mixed mode was to combine different types/models into one stack, which in this case doesn't seem to be.

    Hi all,

I can connect under member 2 and I tried to change it directly from member 2 - no change, member 2 is still Inactive.

Why I am trying to have Mixed mode? - I know that I have EX2300 but different type one "t" and two "p".

According juniper by this issue it is either version mismatch or mode. I have on all switches the same version.

    https://supportportal.juniper.net/s/article/EX-QFX-Fixing-a-Virtual-Chassis-Member-with-an-Inactive-status?language=en_US

    any other suggestion?

    Thanks

The only difference between the "p" and the "t" models is whether they
have PoE or not. That definitely does not count as a "different model".
I have been mixing EX3300's with and without PoE for absolutely years
and never needed to activate mixed mode. For a stack of EX4200 and
EX4550, I do have to activate it though, because it's really a complete
different switch, only the stack interface is the same.

    Hi everyone.

I know what is different between "p" and "t" and I wasnt sure why I have Mixed mode. But this weekend I have tried to change mode to not mixed without success...

either I do something wrong or this is case for juniper support.

to change mode I use command:

request virtual-chassis mode mixed disable reboot. - after reboot it is again mixed

What can I see: (after reboot)

    show virtual-chassis mode
    fpc0:
    --------------------------------------------------------------------------
Current mode : Virtual Chassis with mixed devices
Future mode after reboot : Virtual Chassis with similar devices

    fpc1:
    --------------------------------------------------------------------------
Current mode : Virtual Chassis with mixed devices
Future mode after reboot : Virtual Chassis with similar devices

after reboot it stay with no change (current mode - mixed, after reboot- similar)

another option how to change it? in shell?

    thanks fou your suggestions.

    BR

what is your suggestion to do next?

Interesting. Sorry no real experience with either mixed mode or EX2300
    switches.

Really nobody knows how to fix it? Somehow in shell?

Version on all tree switches is 21.4R3-S1.5

Switches are in mixed mode, where I can't change it to "similar device"

Weird is, after reboot doesn't change anything... Looks like something blocks this change.

Third switch which I want to add is already in correct mode (no configuration is there)

    ISSUE SOLVED.

    1. I downgraded JUNOS to junos-arm-32-21.3R3.10.tgz
    2. I changed mode
    3. Upgraded back to junos-arm-32-21.4R3-S1.5.tgz

Version junos-arm-32-21.4R3-S1.5.tgz has a bug. I will open the ticket because this is recommended version.
