New to Juniper, Need some general advice

I recently finished a Cisco CCNA and now am possibly getting a job with a local service provider that deals with Juniper MX480 and MX 960 devices.  I am trying to get familiar with this equipment. The people I am working for stress that it is "service provider and not enterprise configuration or setup" on the equipment. I started messing around with some command on VLabs sandbox and downloaded GNS3 and am watching some videos on how to do juniper on GNS3 (a bit of a learning curve or time investment just getting the VM set up). Would anyone be able to advise me on the easiest short term (long term as well, maybe) way to get my feet wet with the equipment that I possibly will be working with? I am also new to this forum, so hopefully I posted in the right place,

    Thanks in advance,

    Hello FamFeld,

    welcome to the Juniper world.

Juniper is aware that the most people start with Cisco and are going to Juniper. Hence, Juniper created lots of Day One books for Juniper beginners and lots of other topics. You can find them here:

I'd recommend you to start with the following books:

These Day One books help a lot to start learning with JUNOS, but always in combination with lots of practice.

In addition to the free books Juniper has a lot of free courses in the Junos Genius platform.

Follow the JNCIA-Junos for an organized introduction to the platform.  Since you have a CCNA this should be fast and easy for you.

    Hi Farm,

3 tools that u can use to practice Juniper CLI and concept. Both below need VMWARE install in your laptop. After that u can load image vMX and play with it.

    1.) GNS3

    2.) EVE-NG

    3.) PNET

I am working with setting up GNS3 to interact with the VM that I installed currently.  I am using David Bombal's videos as a guide.

So far I am playing with GNS3, but haven't yet gotten it to interface with the VM.  I changed the BIOS setting on my laptop so the VM now runs, just need to test things out a bit.  This is what I'm using as a guide: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLhfrWIlLOoKNFP_e5xcx5e2GDJIgk3ep6

    Thank you Steve,

I noticed you work at a telecommunications company that deals with metro ethernet. I am particularly interested in how Juniper switches are configured or used from the service provider perspective for metro ethernet. I am new to this field, so if you could also recommend any specific resources that would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks again,

I have on my blog a collection of the Juniper mpls related documentation.  There are two of the free books already mentioned above along with the Architecture and configuration guides from the documentation group.

Thank you.  I may get these printed and bound and spend some time reading.
