  • 1.  Where to purchase cheap gear for training?

    Hello all,

I got my JNCIS-ENT a little while back, doing most of my training for that certification on my comany's spare equipment, but as we have redeployed most of it now and don't plan on purchasing spares, I find myself in need of a lab of my own. Whereabouts should I look for equipment. I assume 2 SRX110/210/240/300 and 2 EX2200 switches should do the trick, but looking over ebay, craigslist, amazon and newegg left me wondering how to make purchasing decisions. Is there a more secure way of looking for this equipment? The quotes I got from resellers were a little high (very high, to be honest) at 600$ for an srx100. A friend of mine has offerred to loan me some of his old equipment, but he will need it back soon, so is there any recommendation that anyone can make? My total budget is around 1000$ for the whole lab.

    Thanks,

You pretty much have the available options outlined.  I purchased all my lab gear via ebay over the years.  There are a number of resellers there with new and refurbished gear which sounds like the type of pricing you have there.

But if you are patient and monitor you will see occasional postings from individuals and companies getting rid of gear at lesser prices.  But you get the gear one at a time this way and do need to pay attention to the details in the text on the condition of the equipment.  But good deals can be had.

But the fundamental issue is that Juniper gear does hold its value pretty well even on the used market.  So it costs to build up a lab.

true spuluka. I was just advising another contributor here. EX 2200 https://www.amazon.com/Juniper-EX2200-24T-4G-Layer-Switch/dp/B003E8APB4/ref=pd_lpo_147_tr_t_3/163-5565122-5559746?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=96YRJB3RKH273F0HE7W0

If add a couple hundred more, you can get 2 EX2200 and two SRX 300. Maybe you can bargain with seller.

    Hello Dmitry,

You could also consider using vSRX, vMX and vQFX10k. They all are available for free on the juniper.net web-site. All you need is juniper account. You could use VMware ESXi/WorkStation/Fusion or KVM to run those products.

    Look here https://www.juniper.net/us/en/dm/free-vsrx-trial/
