  • 1.  What sort of traffic will elevate the CPU % ?

    Posted 04-24-2025 16:51

I noticed a switch in the Mist dashboard that indicated the CPU was well up in CPU utilization. Indocator was red. SO I checked the CPU with the show chassis routing-engine command and got this report:

    show chassis routing-engine
    Routing Engine status:
      Slot 0:
        Current state                  Master
        Temperature                 37 degrees C / 98 degrees F
        CPU temperature             37 degrees C / 98 degrees F
DRAM                      1943 MB (2048 MB installed)
        Memory utilization          22 percent
        5 sec CPU utilization:
          User                      35 percent
          Background                 0 percent
          Kernel                    23 percent
          Interrupt                  3 percent
          Idle                      40 percent
        Model                          RE-EX2300-48MP
        Serial ID                      BUILTIN
        Start time                     2025-04-22 18:20:35 PDT
        Uptime                         1 day, 19 hours, 21 minutes, 2 seconds
Last reboot reason             Router rebooted after a normal shutdown.
Load averages:                 1 minute   5 minute  15 minute
                                           1.78       2.20       2.35

When I look at another switch that is fairly busy with live ports, I only see 2 percent Kernal percent and 97 percent idle.  What should I look at to determine what is using so much CPU time?

    Start by identifying which process:

    To show software processes:

Make sure you are in operational mode.

Enter the 'show system processes extensive' command.
This command shows the CPU utilization on the device and lists the processes in order of CPU utilization.

I'll try that out on some random switches that I get alerts saying they are in the high range.

This kb for evaluation of potential EX switch causes for high CPU and filters to block the traffic causing the increases.

    KB35567

I am seeing this same thing, but when I click on the link I get "You do not have the required access privileges to view the selected content." Is there a way to get to this content so I can continue to diagnose my switches?

Looks like the link has changed.  This seems to be the current one.  The reference is KB35567
