  • 1.  Upgrade QFX5120-48Y Virtual Chassis from 20.4R3 straight to 23.4R2?

    Hi,

    I have a pair of Juniper QFX5120-48Y-8C switches configured as a two-member virtual chassis that are currently running an older version of JunOS and I need to upgrade them to the latest suggested release version. 

    Currently installed:
    Version: JUNOS 20.4R3.8

    What is the proper upgrade path to follow for the jump up to 23.4R2?  Also, some of the links on the Junos Suggested Release page take you directly to the recommended version software download.  However, in this case, the suggested release is "Latest Junos 23.4R2-Sx", where it takes you to the general downloads page for the QFX5120-48Y.  The Install Package file (.tgz) available for download is 23.4R2.13, or, the following file by name:

    jinstall-host-qfx-5e-x86-64-23.4R2.13-secure-signed.tgz

    Is this the correct software, and, what is the proper path to follow to use this, or, can we upgrade straight to version 23.4R2 (from 20.4R3)?  Is there a compatibility matrix available?

    The official upgrade path would be 20.4R3 -> 21.4R3 -> 22.4R3 -> 23.4R2

    I would recommend 20.4R3 -> 21.4R3 -> 23.4R2 as there are some big underlying OS changes in 21.4, but the jump from 21.4 to 23.4 is fine and we have done on loads of our EX series including our EX9208s without issue.

    As for software you need to select Junos SR from the dropdown at the top to get the S releases which will give you the correct versions.

    Hello Andrew,

    A direct upgrade has been tested in Juniper labs and is possible on standalone QFX5120 from 20.4 to 23.4R2 version with minimum hardware and software configuration. It is recommended to test the VC upgrade in your lab with complete hardware and software configuration before upgrading in field.
