When you commit new configuration you will get message that you don't have license but configuration will be committed. After that everything will work.

Hi Michel,
You can transfer license from one device to another one if your devices have 1, 3 or 5 year licences. You cannot transfer licence if it is perpetual.
Self-service instructions on how to transfer a license:
https://supportportal.juniper.net/s/article/Transfer-license-keys-to-an-RMA-replacement-device?language=en_US
If you want to shorten your downtime you have to buy any kind ( 1, 3, 5 years or perpetual ) of licence for spare device. Let me note for the perpetual license you need buy separate support.
Usually Juniper equipment works without license ( base honor license) but you will get log messages constantly when your change configuration. Also JTAC will not help you without license if you need help. I am not sure if it works for EX4600.

bonjour everybody,
how about a quick licence tutorial ?
our network internet access goes through a pair of EX4600 at a central location. Needless to say. one of them going down would be a major service interruption. So the organisation purchased a spare 4600 with both configurations available so to be able to do a quick changeover of a defective one.
the original 4600s do have individual bgp licence installed, but not the spare one. so this brings me to 2 questions I could not find clear anserws on the Juniper site.
1) is there a way to just transfer the licence of the downed device to the spare one ? the purpose of the spare unit was to go back online quick before going through all the RMA procedure that seems required for license transfer from what I read on the Juniper site. Also, from what I understand for a show licence, they are tied to the device serial number. so it may not be possible.
2) if I want to shorten my downtime, should I simply buy a 3rd bgp license for the spare device, install it, and be confident that the spre device can replace any of the 2 online switches ?
thanks for your help.
