I know it should probably be updated. It's being used for a project that we haven't gotten all the bugs worked out and we didn't want to add another variable to the mix.

Might be a version issue, I still can commit both versions of the command on the lab SRX340 running Junos 182R3-S2.9
But only max-configurations-on-flash has auto fill allowed. system max-configurations-rollback has to be fully entered but is still accepted and commits.

It looks like I can not edit that setting. Once I type the part that has max-configuration-on-flash I can not go further. It shows the arrow ( up carrot ) under the m in max.

It has been set to max 5 , so I'll change it to 10 and see how it goes before I decide to increase it.

Very strange ... I have SRX340 without an additional storage drive, and I get 49 rollbacks out of the box without any special configuration. Maybe it's a JunOS version difference.
In the grand scheme of things, even with the limited storage on these devices, configuration files really are rather small.

Steve,
Would there be an issue increasing the defaults if this model SRX does not have an SSD for more storage? I don't want to run our of file space because I am storing more config files. The config for this SRX is not very big. It has a low number of policies.
Here is the system storage output for the /config folder.
/dev/bo0s3e 189432 42 174236 0% /config

It is a full-sized, rack-mounted, SRX, so I expected it would have hard drive space to store the commits. The docs say 5 on the flash card and the rest, up to a total of 49, on the hard drive. I'll give your commands a try.

The smaller SRX generally have a maximum number of configurations set to 5 as a space saving feature. You can adjust this by changing these commands that are in there by default to the desired number. I believe the max is 20.
set system max-configurations-on-flash 5
set system max-configuration-rollbacks 5

No matter how many changes I make, our SRX345 only stores 5 commits. Is this normal for this model?
