  • 1.  remote port mirroring - RSPAN VLAN

    Posted 25 days ago

according to below document, when you configure remote port mirroring (RSPAN) on ELS Junos, the 'no-mac-learning' command should be configured in the transit switch. this should disable mac learning as to turn the vlan into a RSPAN VLAN, similar to the 'remote span' command in IOS XE.

    Configuring Port Mirroring and Analyzers
Port mirroring can be used for traffic analysis on routers and switches that, unlike hubs, do not broadcast packets to every port on the destination device. Port mirroring sends copies of all packets or policy-based sample packets to local or remote analyzers where you can monitor and analyze the data.

however, the mirroring appears to work just the same without this command.

    is this the normal behaviour?

also found that trunk is unnecessary between switches. however, the RSPAN VLAN still needs to be consistent across switches for the mirrored traffic to pass.

how exactly is the mechanism behind port mirroring in Junos?

after some more testing, i found that even RSPAN VLAN is unnecessary.

you may use interface as output in source switch and input in destination switch and the mirrored traffic still goes through.

no explanation on this is found from official documentation. does anyone know about this or is there really such a shortage of talents on Junos?
