Which RE model? Which MPC models? Old stuff means you're limited to JunOS 21.2R3 (21.2R3-S8 currently).
And USB JunOS installation deletes the config of the updated RE.
If your MX480 are dual-RE, you will USB-fresh-install the backup RE (disable GRES/NSR first, as usual, of course), then push back the config to it, then switchover (not GRES/NSR), then rince and repeat (on the other RE). Probably your best option.
Swapping the REs between chassis is probably more complicated, as there's always a risk of hurting some connectors or something.
And if you decide to do the slow update path, it would be 17.3 -> 17.4 -> 18.4 -> 19.4 -> 20.4 -> 21.2, indeed...

Subject: MX480 Upgrade RE's Externally
This message was posted by a user wishing to remain anonymous
Hello -
I've got a handful of MX480's. There is a mix of configurations of the MPC's, but they all have 2 of the same RE's. I'm looking to upgrade a couple of them, but they have very old SW on them (17.3 or there about). I was planning to just upgrade them with a fresh USB install so I don't have to do multiple jumps. I've already verified my configuration is OK on the new version.
That being said - I have one MX480 that is currently not in use, but still powered (we migrated that to a MX304). Is there any good reason to not just upgrade the RE's that are in that chassis, and then swap them with the router I'm looking to upgrade? Reason being, if I had to downgrade for some reason, all I'd have to do is swap back the RE.
I don't care which RE is in which router (as in, the serial number of them), so I can't think of any reason against doing this. Anyone gone this route?
Thanks,
