Mist Edge – Tunnel not coming up (status orange) / Unable to find tunnel configuration in current UI

  • 1.  Mist Edge – Tunnel not coming up (status orange) / Unable to find tunnel configuration in current UI

    Posted 01-28-2026 08:18

    Hello everyone,

I'm having difficulties with Mist Edge tunnel configuration, and despite reviewing the official documentation, I'm unable to clearly identify where the tunnel is created/configured in the current Mist UI, as described in the guides.

    Environment / Scenario

    • Mist Edge Virtual Appliance (VM) successfully deployed

    • Mist Edge status: Connected

    • Edge is properly claimed, registered, and added to a cluster

    • Cluster created successfully at Org level

    • OOBM IP and Tunnel IP configured

    • Mist Edge appears correctly under Inventory and Clusters

    • However:

      • Mist Tunnel does not come up

      • Tunnel status remains orange

      • Connections = 0

      • APs are not forming tunnels to the Mist Edge

    Main Question

    According to the documentation:

    • Mist Edge must be part of a cluster

    • A Mist Tunnel (Org-level or Site-level) must be created

    • APs form tunnels when SSIDs are configured as tunneled WLANs

In the current Mist UI, I cannot clearly find where the Mist Tunnel is created, or the workflow/UI seems different from what is shown in the documentation.

    Specific Questions

    1. In the current Mist portal UI, where exactly is the Mist Tunnel created?

    2. Is the tunnel:

      • Automatically created when the cluster is created?

      • Or does it require a manual configuration step in a specific menu?

    3. Is a WLAN Template / SSID configured for tunneling mandatory for the tunnel to become active?

    4. Does the orange tunnel status indicate:

      • No APs using the tunnel yet?

      • Incomplete configuration?

      • Reachability issues (firewall, MTU, required ports)?

    5. Is there any mandatory step that is not clearly documented, especially for lab / PoC environments?

    Additional Context

I've reviewed the Mist Edge Guide, including:

    • Create Mist Cluster

    • Create Mist Tunnel (Org-level / Site-level)

However, the documentation does not clearly explain the practical workflow in the current UI, especially:

    • Where to click to create the tunnel

    • How the tunnel is associated with APs and SSIDs

If anyone has already faced this issue or can share an updated step-by-step guidance, I would really appreciate it.

    Thank you in advance.

Hi CLEITON DA SILVA DOS SANTOS

It seems you have onboarded the Mist Edge at the ORG level and it is showing connected to the cloud but it is not creating any L2TP tunnels with the APs. Please make sure :
    1. You have created a cluster and Tunnel from the left-side "Mist Edge" pane

    2. Create a WLAN and add the mist edge under "Custom Forwarding" to "ORG Mist Edge" and select the Tunnel you created above.

    3. Add the WLAN to a site and then add APs to that site.

The reason why you are not seeing the tunnel configuration setting on "Mist Edge" page is due to the subscription. Juniper MIST edge License subscription structure:

AP tunnelling license is available as a 1, 3 or 5 year option

Also, thank you for confirming that the reason we are not seeing the tunnel configuration settings under the Mist Edge page is related to the subscription/entitlement, and that the AP tunneling license is available in 1/3/5-year options.

In parallel, we noticed repeated errors in the Mist Edge Events for the Virtual Mist Edge VM. The key messages we see are:

    • "tunterm: configure failed … ERROR: register tunterm failed"

    • "This program can only be run on AMD64 processors with v3 microarchitecture support."

    • We also see apt-related services in failed state (apt-daily / apt-daily-upgrade), but the main blocker appears to be the CPU/microarchitecture requirement for tunterm registration.

    Could you please confirm:

    1. Whether this CPU requirement (AMD64 x86_64-v3) would prevent the Virtual Mist Edge from completing registration/services properly and, consequently, impact tunnel establishment?

    2. What are the official CPU requirements for Virtual Mist Edge (and recommended VMware settings), and how we can validate compliance on our hypervisor/VM?

    3. If there is a supported workaround (e.g., different image/version, specific CPU compatibility mode) for lab testing, or if we must run the VM on a host that supports x86_64-v3.
