The Juniper Services team will monitor the community for your #UpgradeQuestions and host two live Ask the Expert sessions in September 2023 to answer your questions about upgrading from Junos 12.x, 14.x, 15.x, and 16.x versions.

If you leverage older versions of Juniper routers, switches, and firewalls, please check the last supported Junos software version (LSV) for your hardware/device.

    Junos Upgrade Path
End of Support Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

    1. Why should I upgrade?
      1. A newer version of the OS includes new features, enhancements, and bug fixes. Learn more about the benefits of upgrading.
      2. We will no longer accept, or action, support cases for Junos releases 14 or 16 starting on Feb. 15, 2024, and releases 12 and 15 starting on Aug. 31, 2024. Don't delay! Start your upgrade process today.
      3. Exceptions: If your hardware is using the last-supported software version (LSV) for Junos, your support will continue until your hardware’s EOL date, which you may locate here.
    2. Are any hardware platforms excluded from this notification?
      1. Yes. As noted above, hardware running LSV versions of Junos maintain support until its EOL date, including:
        1. SRX110, SRX210, SRX220, SRX240, and SRX650 devices running Junos 12.3X48. That hardware is eligible for support until November 30, 2024.
        2. QFX 3008 running Junos 14.1x53-D130. That hardware is eligible for support until August 31, 2024.
        3. T1600, T4000, and T640 running Junos 16.2. That hardware is eligible for support until August 31, 2024.
    3. What are the upgrade steps?
      1. Verify your device is not past its end of life.
        1. Refer to End of Life Products & Milestones for device end-of-life status.
      2. Identify the target software to upgrade.
        1. The Suggested Releases to Consider and Evaluate article has information on suggested releases by device.
        2. Junos OS Dates & Milestones can help you understand support timelines.
      3. Determine software upgrade approach and upgrade path.
        1. If you have on-site personnel, using USB storage to complete the software upgrade can reduce complexity and save time. For standard Junos upgrades, refer to the Junos OS Software Installation and Upgrade Guide which contains detailed upgrade procedures. If you have specific questions on the upgrade path, feel free to post your questions on the community.
      4. Download software.
        1. Use the Software Downloads Portal.
        2. If you are unable to locate the desired software, reply to this post with your question or contact JTAC.
      5. Verify the configuration and take the configuration backup.
        1. Test the software upgrade.
    4. Where can I download newer software for my device?
      1. Software can be downloaded from the Software Downloads Portal. You will need your product's (device) name to find the appropriate software.
    5. Where can I find whether my device has a last supported software version (LSV)?

      1. Refer to the Suggested Releases to Consider and Evaluate KB article

    6. Why is there a last supported version of software for my device?
      1. Juniper devices receive hardware updates as new software features and resiliency are developed. If your device is near or has passed its end-of-life date, the newer releases may not function due to differences in components or hardware architecture change requirements.
      2. SRX110, SRX210, SRX220, SRX240, SRX650 have a last software version (LSV) of Junos 12.3x48. These devices, as well as any other device on an LSV, are eligible for technical support services until the device’s end of life date as long as the customer is using the specified LSV on their device.
    7. Where can I find end-of-support timelines for available Junos releases?
      1. Refer to the Junos OS Dates & Milestones for timelines and some hardware-based exceptions.
    8. How can Juniper help in planning the upgrade process to avoid any potential risks?
      1. Juniper provides detailed analysis services for software upgrade planning. Leverage the Software Upgrade Recommendation and Review or Network Optimization Consulting Services, to better assess the recommended software release for your network.
      2. Additionally, Juniper provides fully customized testing services to qualify Junos OS upgrade path testing and new target Junos OS release in Juniper Networks’ internal physical testing lab environment known as Customer Certification Lab (CCL). Leverage Juniper Testing-as-a-Service (TaaS) offering to mitigate any potential risks to your network.
    9. What if I encounter an issue when I am deploying the updated Junos software?
      1. To avoid issues in advance, please refer to the Software Upgrade Recommendation and Review or Network Optimization Consulting Services.
      2. Post questions in the Elevate community for peer and expert guidance.
      3. Raise a ticket with JTAC if you think you encountered a bug or gap in our upgrade procedures.
    10. Who can I contact if I have questions and need assistance from Juniper?
      1. Post questions in the Elevate community for peer and expert guidance. Juniper technical personnel monitor communities and provide support.
      2. Contact your Juniper Account Manager or Juniper Partner Manager for personal guidance.
    11. What if I clearly have a hardware problem that doesn't require tech support? I have an active service contract, so where can I get a field replaceable unit (RMA)
      1. Determining whether an issue is from software or hardware can be very difficult, especially with software that is end of support. If it is clearly a hardware issue, contact our Customer Care department, open an administrative case, and initiate an RMA.
    12. What should I do if my hardware is end of life too?
      1. You need to upgrade your hardware if it is EOL. Start that process today by contacting your Juniper Account Manager or reseller to discuss your options.
    13. What should I do if I don't have a Juniper Account Manager?
      1. If you need assistance finding yours, complete this brief "Request a Call" form.
    14. How is this EOS enforcement being communicated?
      1. Emails are being sent to companies that have opened a ticket for Junos 12.x, 14.x, 15.x, and 16.x in 2022 or 2023.  This email is being sent from customer_success@customersuccess.juniper.net and is a valid notification.  Multiple notifications will be shared until the EOS enforcement dates.
