Juniper AP 33 | 5GHz | Help Required

  • 1.  Juniper AP 33 | 5GHz | Help Required

    Posted 22 days ago

    Hello Team,

We are currently working with 33 Juniper access points managed through the Juniper Mist Portal. At one of our locations, we have enabled only the 5 GHz band as per the client's requirements. There are approximately 29 access points deployed on the same floor.

When connecting our mobile phones to the SSID, we noticed that the devices associate with access points that are farther away, even when we are standing directly beneath a closer access point. The configuration is managed through switch templates and WLAN templates. For testing purposes, we also removed the RF templates, but the issue persists-our devices continue to connect to distant access points instead of those nearby.

Could someone please assist us in resolving this issue?

    Thank you.

First, connectivity of the devices depend on the client device completely, the logic programmed by the developers in the driver/firmware of the wireless adapter, nothing you can do to make them connect where you want.

Second, check if ALL APs are broadcasting the SSID. It seems to me that the closer APs maybe not broadcasting it. There are many tools you can use from a client side to detect all SSIDs (WinFi for Windows for instance), but you can also go into the AP page in Mist dashboard to see if those APs are broadcasting the SSID. If they are not, then look for the problem (missing VLAN in the switch port, or in the switch they are connected to). But if they are, check whether they are close to the floor and with proper orientation.

Third, how can you remove the RF template? You need a RF template for APs to configure the proper settings.

Alright, I have again enabled the RF template on the site. Moreover, can you please check and validate the configuration of RF template as 2.4 Ghz has been disabled on the WLAN template. The RF template configuration has been attached.

Moreover, my laptop is getting connected on the nearest AP, whereas the cell phones (multiple people) are getting on the different access points that are not nearest.

At previously said, devices take the decision about where to connect and when to roam, nothing you can't do except update drivers, firmware and software to see if that improves the experience. Or open a ticket to the manufacturer's support to see if they can program a better logic.

Thanks for your reply and helping out. I have trouble shoot the issue and found that some specific access points are not broadcasting the SSID on 5 Ghz due to which its getting connected on the farther AP.
Now how this issue will be resolved. What needs to be done?

    Please advise

Assuming that the WLAN template applies to all APs in that site, and not limited to some APs with a device profile, check VLAN that WLAN is forwarding traffic exist in the switch, check that VLAN is in its trunk ports to the upward switches/routers, and in the switch ports facing the APs.

    Hi,

Thanks for your reply. Basically from same access point and same SSID, the laptops are getting connected on 5 GHz and cell phones are not getting connected on 5 GHz. Moreover, on other access points the cell phones gets easily connected on 5GHz.

So we need to figure out the issue and resolve it.

    Please advise.

Alright, we have enabled the RF template again with 2.4 Ghz has been disabled on the WLAN template. Can you please check the RF template either its correct?

Also my personal laptop is getting connected to the nearest AP on the 5 GHz, whereas the cell phone (i.e. multiple people) are getting connected on the access points that are farther away.

Any thing can we can do since its a pain point for us.

We are still experiencing a problem where certain Android smartphones can connect to AP 33 on the 5 GHz band, but the same devices cannot connect to other AP 33 units. All access points are part of the same site and use the same switch/WLAN templates.

    Some thoughts:

    • You mentioned turning off 2.4 Ghz, but your screen shot shows it enabled, and the dual-band radio settings set to 2.4 Ghz only.  What are you trying to accomplish with these RF settings?
    • If I were in your shoes, I would take one of the problem APs to an isolated location so that no other RF signals are present.  Then attempt to connect to it with both known-good and problem devices and see what happens.  (Basically, try to isolate the problem to as small of a scope as possible.)
    • Have you opened a case with Mist support?  (Forums are not the best way to get help for urgent problems.)
    • What problems is it causing when a phone connects to an AP that is further away?

Please find below responses against your queries:

    • Snap shot shared was the old one, now we are also disabled 2.4 Ghz band on both RF template and SSID to see if 5 Ghz band is working on AP, but is not.
    • Yeah we already done the troubleshooting and isolate the affected points to see if they are broadcasting the 5 Ghz band or not and the result is SSID is showing on the laptops and iPhone only and not showing on android smart phones.
    • Yeah it has been done and they are checking.
    • When a user gets connected to further away, it results in weak wifi signals and throughput

    Hi,

Thanks for your reply. Please find below the responses against your questions:

That was an old snap shot, the latest snap shot has been attached, please refer it. What we have done now is completely disabled 2.4 Ghz from both SSID and RF templates in order to properly check the 5 Ghz issue and its not working.

    • If I were in your shoes, I would take one of the problem APs to an isolated location so that no other RF signals are present.  Then attempt to connect to it with both known-good and problem devices and see what happens.  (Basically, try to isolate the problem to as small of a scope as possible.)

Yeah we have done exactly the same and then diagnose a problem that there are some devices which are not broadcasting the 5 Ghz. So we need to address those and resolve the issue.

    • Have you opened a case with Mist support?  (Forums are not the best way to get help for urgent problems.)

Yeah it has been done and they are checking.

    • What problems is it causing when a phone connects to an AP that is further away?

There is a site on which only 5 Ghz band is operational and multiple AP's are working. Since the user gets connected on further away AP,  that results in weak wifi signal and bad throughput due to which there are complains of slow internet connection.
