Help with Q-in-Q on EX4600 and EX3400

  • 1.  Help with Q-in-Q on EX4600 and EX3400

    Posted 24 days ago

    Hello everyone.

I am stuck in counfiguring Q-in-Q on my EX4600 and EX3400 switiches. All of the tutorials I've found online don't fit to my situation and my infrastructure and I am looking for help.

First I will try to describe my network infrasctructure.

I have EX4600 on the edge of my network which are connected to my ISP. I also have remote location with EX3400 which is on the edge of remote network which is also connected to the same ISP provider.

My ISP is providing several L2 VLANS over his network which connects my both locations. Let's say those VLANS are 1500-1510

On my side of network in both locations I have multiple vlans on both sides (diffrent vlan ids on both locations). What I need to achive is to connect those vlans via Q-in-Q between locations.

The trick is that my ISP won't be adding additional VLAN tag on his devices. I need to do Q-in-Q on my 3400 and 4600.

Right now vlans 1500-15100 are normally configured as family ethernet-switching on unit 0 on both sides. I want to use vlan 1510 as an outer TAG to send my local vlans double tagged with 1510 and send over my ISP to my remote location. For the purpose of this post let's say I want to send vlan's 200-210 with Q-in-Q with 1510 as an outer TAG. On both switches vlans 200-210 are tagged on multiple switch ports so I can't use the configuration on most of tutorials where usually all traffic (tagged and untagged) which come to certain port are double tagged with outer vlan and this outer vlan is send over ISP network.

I know my explenation is quite confusing but I hope someone will understand.

How many hand-offs is your ISP providing you? I have two. One is setup as routed and the other is set for Q-in-Q.

My ISP is doing outer tagging.  In this scenario, all I have to do is set the port as trunk and tag the VLANS that I want to share with the other site.

    Hope this helps.

You're right, but this works only if the port connected with the carrier operator is untagged (that is, it's only a point to point link, not a point to multipoint).

But in this case it looks we're talking about a tagged interface...

The problem is that my ISP won't be doing the outer tagging. I need to make the outer tagging on my EX4600, which is connected to my ISP via Aggregated Interface (two ex4600 in virtual chasis), for vlans 200-210 with outer tag 1510 and my ISP will send those packets with outer tag 1510 over his network to my other location where i need to strip the outer tag on EX3400 which is connected to my ISP with single interface (no VC in remote location). And additionally i need to be able to send single tagged vlans via the same interfaces through my ISP.

All the tutorials I've found online are for case where the ISP is doing the other tag via a dedicated interface between ISP switch and client switch.

You should actually look at: Configuring Q-in-Q Tunneling on EX Series Switches with ELS Support

You have to keep in mind that:

    • on an EX you can't «terminate» a QinQ  / double tagged vlan inside the box ; just pass it from one port to another with adding/removing/double tagging the frames
    • on an MX you can terminate a double tagged vlan on a port (you can define a layer 3 unit with both inner and outer vlan tags).

If you need to terminate a doubletagged vlan inside the EX (for layer 3 or classic layer 2), then I'm afraid you would have to go with external tromboning (one physical port or LAG configured for QinQ tagging push/pop, toward one other physical port or LAG on the same switch waiting for single tagged vlans).
