  • 1.  EX3400-24T switch crashed and stuck in shell mode after a power reboot

    Posted 11-09-2022 11:55
    Hi Community,

    We have a Juniper EX3400-24T switch, and recently we have upgraded it to JunOS version 20.4R3-S4.8.  There was a power failure in our distribution facility and the switch rebooted due to that. Then we have identified that EX3400 switch is not functioning, it was no longer assigned to the virtual chassis.  We had a console connection to the switch and noticed that it is stuck in the shell mode, and it is not allowing us to go in to CLI.

    This is the error log we are getting,

    root@:LC:1% cli
    Oct 27 16:05:53 cli: UI_DBASE_OPEN_FAILED: Database open failed for file '/var/run/db/render.db': Not a directory
    <xnm:error xmlns="http://xml.juniper.net/xnm/1.1/xnm" xmlns:xnm="http://xml.juniper.net/xnm/1.1/xnm">
    <message>
    could not open render database schema: /var/run/db/render.db
    </message>
    </xnm:error>
    could not initialize the renderer
    root@:LC:1%
    root@:LC:1%

    Kindly provide a solution to this matter.

    Thanks.

    Hi!

    Perhaps you could do this some other way, but the easiest would be to do a "USB format install":
    https://supportportal.juniper.net/s/article/EX-How-to-format-install-EX2300s-and-EX3400s-via-USB?language=en_US

    This formats the flash memory of the switch and installs Junos fresh. It will then most likely join the VC when you attach it again. I would definitely isolate it from the VC and anything alse before doing the format install just to make sure nothing else is wiped.

    Remember to download the Install Media, not the usual Install Package (it's well described in the link).

    After getting the VC back to normal, check to see if you have "set system auto-snapshot" activated in your config. This can prevent switches from entering this state if file system corruption is the cause. Also check all your switches so you don't have any active alarms ("show system alarm" and "show chassis alarm"). If the system has booted on the alternate partition due to file system corruption, you will see it there. Solution:

    Hi Fredrik,

    Thanks for the answer. We will do the "USB Format Install" and get back to you with the results.

    In another thread about a failing EX2300, the USB used was not identified by the switch. When performing the USB format install, check for this:

    "You should see this in an EX2300 when you have a USB stick inserted in it (even if i has no Junos image on it):

    starting USB...
    USB0: USB EHCI 1.00
    scanning bus 0 for devices... 4 USB Device(s) found
    scanning usb for storage devices... 2 Storage Device(s) found"

    That was for an EX2300, but I think it will be the same for the EX3400. If the USB isn't properly identified, only 3 USB devices will appear and only 1 storage device.

    Good luck!

    Hi,

    We have sorted out the issue with booting the OS via USB, and thank you very much for your support.
