Question

What minimum configuration do network devices require for Junos Space Network Management Platform to manage them?

Answer

To discover and manage network devices, Junos Space software requires that the devices have the following minimum configuration:

  • An in-band or out-of-band static management IP address configured on the device. This IP address must be reachable from the Junos Space server.
  • A user ID belonging to the superuser class or a class that has at least the permissions mentioned in the Knowledge Base article KB21884 exists on the device. Junos Space uses this user ID to authenticate the SSH connection with the device.
  • SSH version 2 is enabled on the device. You can use the following command to enable SSH version 2 on the device:
set system services ssh protocol-version v2
  • Ping and SNMP are enabled on the device. Ping and SNMP are used to confirm whether the device is reachable and whether it is a Juniper Networks device before the device is managed by Junos Space.
  • SNMP is enabled on the device with appropriate read-only version 1 (SNMPv1), version 2C (SNMPv2C), or version 3 (SNMPv3) credentials if you plan to use SNMP to probe devices as part of the device discovery process.

NOTE:

  • For device-initiated connections, you do not need to configure a static management IP address on the device. However, some features of Junos Space Platform might not be available.
  • Although ping and SNMP are not strictly required, we recommend that you enable both on the device. SNMP is used for the Network Monitoring functionality of Junos Space Platform, whereas ping speeds up the process of device discovery when you are discovering multiple IP addresses.
