  • 1.  upgrade from 20.4R2-S2.2 to 21.1

    Posted 01-24-2022 15:36

    Bonjour everybody,

Junos 21.3R1 was identified in JSA11287 Security bulletin   as resolving multiple vulnerabilities.

So I decided to install it on a couple of 2300-C in my lab while waiting for it to become the recommended version by JTAC

My 2300 are running JUNOS 20.4R2-S2.2. now.

I used the following options to install the new image , as I have been doing about a zillion times.

request system software add /tmp/junos-arm-32-21.3R1.9.tgz force unlink no-copy

... but after the removal of some /var files, the installation stopped with the following message

ERROR: Cannot validate junos-arm-32-21.3R1.9.tgz: requires osmajor 12 kernel support.

NOTICE: Use the 'no-validate' option to proceed.

Now I will try using the no-validate option, since this is a lab,  but I was a bit concerned on the consequences of using this option, since I have been doing many times those kind of upgrade without this option being requested.

    Any thoughts ?

    Thanks,

You see this message because there was an upgrade in the Kernel-Space below JunOS (BSD-Upgrade) :)

And since an older Version cannot correctly verify a new Version this message is expected and can safely be used.

    Hello,

here you can find the public document for this behavior:

    https://prsearch.juniper.net/InfoCenter/index?page=prcontent&id=PR1568757

By the way, the "unlink" upgrade command should not be used on EX series platforms, even the knob is visible:

"(Optional) On M Series, T Series, and MX Series routers, use the unlink option to remove the software package from this directory after a successful upgrade is completed."

I've seen strange behavior in the past by using the unlink option on alternative platforms.

Actually unlink is set by default now on the EX Series - usually it even shows this if you set this option :)

    Bonne soirée  Christian,

Yes, I remember seeing the « setting unlink by default" statement appear at the beginning of the adding new image process.

So I guess I can pretty much remove it from my command and replace it with what I see in the PR1568757 is a mandatory   no-validate option.

Thank you very very much for your quick and useful answers.
