  • 1.  what is the difference between PFE and FPC hardware?

    Posted 03-17-2020 20:08

    Hi there!

I have just read the following, and I have a question about this.

    Type of BFD session

    Description

    Non-distributed BFD

BFD sessions running completely on the Routing Engine.

    Distributed BFD

BFD sessions running completely on the Packet Forwarding Engine.

    Inline BFD

Note: Starting in Junos OS Release 13.3, inline BFD is supported only on static MX Series routers with MPCs/MICs that have configured enhanced-ip.

Note: Starting in Junos OS Release 16.1R1, the inline BFD sessions are supported on integrated routing and bridging (IRB) interfaces.

BFD sessions running on the FPC hardware.

I wonder what is the difference between PFE and FPC hardware.

Could you please advise me the page with this content?

Or Could you please advise me more about this?

    Thank you for reading me.

    Best Regards,

    Hi

PFE is the complete packet forwarding Engine and it includes the FPC as well as a component.

PFE itself is split into several major components:

    • Midplane

    • PICs

    • FPCs

    • Control board (switching/forwarding)

You can get more information in the Design and Operation segment of this link

    Hope this helps.

    Hi Lee.

    I hope you´re doing well.

Here some details that may help you understand a bit more about  PFE and RE in Junos.

Junos OS runs on the Routing Engine. The Routing Engine kernel coordinates communication among the Junos OS processes and provides a link to the Packet Forwarding Engine.

A switch has two primary software processing components:

    Packet Forwarding Engine:

—Processes packets; applies filters, routing policies, and other features; and forwards packets to the next hop along the route to their final destination.

    Routing Engine—Provides three main functions:

Creates the packet forwarding switch, which provides route lookup, filtering, and switching on incoming data packets, and then directs outbound packets to the appropriate interface for transmission to the network.

Maintains the routing tables used by the switch and controls the routing protocols that run on the switch.

Provides control and monitoring functions for the switch, including controlling power and monitoring system status.

    Cheers.

    Hello,

This page requires some serious translation work.

I shall do it for You now  Smiley Embarassed

    Type of BFD session

    Description

    Non-distributed BFD

BFD sessions running completely on the Routing Engine.

    Distributed BFD

When in INIT mode, BFD session runs on Routing Engine. When in UP mode, BFD sessions are running completely on the linecard PowerPC CPU .

    Inline BFD

Note: Starting in Junos OS Release 13.3, inline BFD is supported only on static MX Series routers with MPCs/MICs that have configured "chassis network-services enhanced-ip".

Note: Starting in Junos OS Release 16.1R1, the inline BFD sessions are supported on integrated routing and bridging (IRB) interfaces.

When in INIT mode, BFD session runs on Routing Engine.

When in UP mode, BFD sessions are running on the Trio LookUp (LU) chip, or equivalent lookup block in the Trio newer chips if no separate LU chip (such as MPC7,8 and newer).

    Thx
