  • 1.  North Star Controller 's adoption: Service provider versus Enterprise

    Posted 07-23-2020 20:59

    Hi everyone,

I am curious if Service providers are the only ones deploying SDN WAN using North Star or do we have enterprises also using North Star for SDN WAN?

Thanks and have a good day!!

    Hello,

There are a few but they are not public references.

Please talk to Your Juniper Systems Engineer, s/he would be happy to provide examples under NDA.

    HTH

    Thx

    Alex

    Hi sarahr202,

Greetings, the answer is yes, remember that SDN and SD-WAN is pretty much the same concept just applied to different places, you will usually see SDN deployment in the enterprise realm which is also called SD-LAN but it's really the same tech applied to a different architecture designs, etc ( everything that could very from an ISP to an Enterprise network)  just like MPLS you can run it in your enterprise or in a service provider environment and there are service providers and enterprises that are using it. Going more over the North star controller it is the same thing and the answer is yes, Juniper also has it documented.

The Juniper Networks NorthStar Controller is an SDN controller that enables granular visibility and control of IP/MPLS tunnels in large service provider and enterprise networks. Network operators can use the NorthStar Controller to optimize their network infrastructure through proactive monitoring, planning, and explicit routing of large traffic loads dynamically based on user-defined constraints.

Network operators need the ability to automate provisioning and managing network service paths for a variety of application- and end user-defined constraints. NorthStar Controller, the industry’s first WAN software-defined networking (SDN) controller for traffic optimization, helps operators achieve this goal. It automates the control of segment routing and IP/MPLS flows in service provider, cloud provider, and large enterprise networks.

Just to be clear, Northstar is automation for lsp tunnels on mpls networks.

If you are an enterprise looking for SD-WAN then this would be the Juniper product implementation.
