  • 1.  MX204 not showing 'ether-options' nor 'speed'

    Hi all,

I have 2 MX204 running 18.3R3.8 (exact same code on both with same licencing). Can anyone help me understand why one MX204 will allow me to manually setup 'speed' under a GE interface and the other won't give me the option at all?

I can force the command but then it will say that is not supported, which is very odd given the other works just fine.

    FIRST DEVICE (fail)

    SECOND DEVICE (good)

    Thanks!

    Hi FER,
I have had similar errors where two similar devices don't support the same features. It could be related to manufactured hardware if they were bought at different (built in different batches). But I wouldn't think a simple knob like "speed" is related to that.
Anyways, Also can you verify if you have "gigether-options" under interfaces hierarchy? Its similar to ether-options if its available.

    This might help:  https://www.juniper.net/documentation/us/en/software/junos/interfaces-ethernet/topics/ref/statement/speed-gigether-options.html

It does not support speed 100m, it only supports speed 1G on mx204. you can check mx204 datasheet.

That can't be the case, since I have several MX204 which do support 100m. Which is what makes this case really odd.

We are talking about same hardware in every regards (chassis and optics).

    Thanks!

    Hi Ali,

Thanks for the answer. I actually tried that and speed is not present under gigether-options either. Is just not present anywhere, which is really odd.

I have seen the problem you describe where you have 2 exact same platforms, but because of different chipset they support different features, but as you say... something as simple as "speed" should be either.

Anyway will keep digging! Thanks again!

yeah definitely interesting! I'm curious what code version are you running on MX204? can you also share "show chassis hardware"?

I notice in the "working MX204" you only have 10G SFP optics, so on which port/optic do you have the 100M there, vs on which port/optic do you have it in the "not working MX204"?

Also, judging by the interface number (ge-250/0/3 and ge-100/0/23) it looks like you're working on something like a Fusion setup or something like that? Because if that is the case it could complicate things further. Could you elaborate a bit more on the setup? Because it might have to do with the Fusion device connected to it, and/or the Fusion software version running on *that* device perhaps?
