    Posted 05-19-2020 02:38

    Hi there,

    I have an mx960 with MPC MPC7E 3D MRATE-12xQSFPP-XGE-XLGE-CGE installed in fpc 2

    FPC 2 REV 46 xxxx xxxx MPC7E 3D MRATE-12xQSFPP-XGE-XLGE-CGE
      CPU REV 21 xxxx xxxx SMPC PMB
      PIC 0 BUILTIN BUILTIN MRATE-6xQSFPP-XGE-XLGE-CGE
              Xcvr 2 REV 01 xxxx xxxx QSFP-100GBASE-LR4
              Xcvr 5 REV 01 xxx xxx QSFP-100GBASE-LR4

       PIC 1 BUILTIN BUILTIN MRATE-6xQSFPP-XGE-XLGE-CGE

    Now i want to use some ports on PIC1:

    What was done:

    1)set speed on port 0,1,3

    [edit chassis fpc 2]
    +    pic 1 {
    +        port 0 {
    +            speed 40g;
    +        }
    +        port 1 {
    +            speed 40g;
    +        }
    +        port 3 {
    +            speed 40g;
    +        }
    +    }

    reset line-card on pic1

     request chassis pic pic-slot 1 fpc-slot 2 offline
    fpc 2 pic 1 offline initiated, use "show chassis fpc pic-status" to verify

    and

    show chassis fpc pic-status
    Slot 1   Online       MPC4E 3D 32XGE
      PIC 0  Online       8X10GE SFPP
      PIC 1  Online       8X10GE SFPP
      PIC 2  Online       8X10GE SFPP
      PIC 3  Online       8X10GE SFPP
    Slot 2   Online       MPC7E 3D MRATE-12xQSFPP-XGE-XLGE-CGE
      PIC 0  Online       MRATE-6xQSFPP-XGE-XLGE-CGE
      PIC 1  Online       MRATE-6xQSFPP-XGE-XLGE-CGE

    No alarms.

    I than insert on port et-2/1/0 this sfp

    40G QSFP+ LR4 LC

    But I can not see it from show chassis hardware.

    Port is created but no optics visible

    show interfaces et-2/1/0
    Physical interface: et-2/1/0, Enabled, Physical link is Down
    Interface index: 196, SNMP ifIndex: 798
    Link-level type: Ethernet, MTU: 1514, MRU: 1522, Speed: 40Gbps, BPDU Error: None, Loop Detect PDU Error: None, Loopback: Disabled, Source filtering: Disabled,
    Flow control: Enabled

    Any idea if i am missing something?

    Thanks.

    Hi FabNewCert,

    Did you try resetting the pic after inserting the SFP?

    yes

    request chassis pic pic-slot 1 fpc-slot 2 offline
    fpc 2 pic 1 offline initiated, use "show chassis fpc pic-status" to verify

    show chassis fpc pic-status

    PIC 0 Online 8X10GE SFPP
    PIC 1 Online 8X10GE SFPP

    Slot 2 Online MPC7E 3D MRATE-12xQSFPP-XGE-XLGE-CGE
    PIC 0 Online MRATE-6xQSFPP-XGE-XLGE-CGE
    PIC 1 Offline MRATE-6xQSFPP-XGE-XLGE-CGE

    request chassis pic pic-slot 1 fpc-slot 2 online
    fpc 2 pic 1 online initiated, use "show chassis fpc pic-status" to verify

    did not work, but thanks for the comment.

    Hi FabNewCert,

    Can you confirm the status of LEDs(Red/Green/Amber) on the component faceplate indicate that the SFP is functioning correctly?

    Also, please make sure you have followed proper steps while removing/inserting the SFPs into the slots. The below document has them listed:

    https://www.juniper.net/documentation/en_US/release-independent/junos/topics/task/installation/sfp-xfp-mx960-replacing.html#jd0e52

    To rule out an issue with physical port, you can try using the same SFP on the other ports say et-2/1/1 or et-2/1/2 and verify if the optic comes up. If SFP comes up in other ports and not on this specific one, you may want to perform loopback testing.

    You can refer https://www.juniper.net/documentation/en_US/junos/topics/topic-map/ethernet-fast-and-gigabit-loopback-testing.html for the same to verify if the port is faulty.

    Hope this helps 🙂

    forgot to say that i am using a flexoptics optic which were programmed as JNP-QSFP-40GLR4

    Hi FabNewCert,

    Just a thought, can you try using a spare optic and inserting it into that port?

    Idea is to check if this QSFP is support or not. If you could insert a say working QSFP from the other PIC into port et-2/1/0 it would confirm the same. PS: We might have to reboot PIC once we have the QSFP inserted.

    Sharat

    Hello FabNewCert,

    Can you quickly try below troubleshooting steps and update:

    1. Firstly, offline the PIC 1 and physically remove the optics, clean it, and insert it back.
    2. Check for the active alarms on the device: show interfaces et-2/1/0 extensive |match active
    3. I see the Physical Link is down on the interface, can you check if the peer end device is up and working?
    4. If there is no issue with the peer end, then perform a Softloop/hard-loop using below documentation :

    https://www.juniper.net/documentation/en_US/junos/topics/topic-map/ethernet-fast-and-gigabit-loopback-testing.html

    If the Link comes up when you perform a Softloop/hardloop then the optics you are using is good and stable.

    If the Links remains DOWN, then the issue is with the optics.

         5. You check the optics by inserting in another port slot of the same FPC or different to isolate the issue.

        6. Also, you can insert a well known working optics in the et-2/1/0 to narrow down the issue.

        7. Then reboot the PIC and see if it works.

        8. Lastly, if the results are not favorable, then reboot the whole FPC 2 to initialize all the PIC's and ports and check the behavior.

    Once you perform the above steps, please provide us the below outputs:

    1.  show interfaces et-2/1/0 extensive
    2. show interfaces diagnostics optics et-2/1/0
    3. show chassis alarms
    4. show chassis fpc detail

    I hope this helps. Please mark this post "Accept as solution" if this answers your query.

    Kudos are always appreciated! Smiley Happy

    ok solution was very simpler: the technician installed the optics in the wrong port....btw thanks for the valuable info and effort.
