  • 1.  Juniper MX5 with MX80 license

    Hello,

If using a Juniper MX5 with an upgrade of mx5-to-mx10-upgrade, mx10-to-mx40-upgrade and mx40-to-mx80-upgrade, what happens if the mx5-to-mx10 expires but not the other two?

    Thanks,
    Greg

    Hello Greg,

these licenses are permanent licenses, so they should not expire in any way. This is the output of an MX5 upgraded to an MX80:

    > show system license
    License usage:
                                     Licenses Licenses Licenses Expiry
      Feature name used installed needed
      mx5-to-mx10-upgrade 0 1 0 permanent
      mx10-to-mx40-upgrade 0 1 0 permanent
      mx40-to-mx80-upgrade 0 1 0 permanent

    Thank you.

    My device shows this:

    show system license
    License usage:
                                     Licenses Licenses Licenses Expiry
      Feature name used installed needed
      scale-subscriber 0 1000 0 permanent
      scale-l2tp 0 1000 0 permanent
      scale-mobile-ip 0 1000 0 permanent
      mx5-to-mx10-upgrade 1 0 1 29 days
      mx10-to-mx40-upgrade 0 1 0 permanent
      mx40-to-mx80-upgrade 0 1 0 permanent

    Licenses installed:
      License identifier: XXXXXXXXXX
      License version: 4
      Features:
        mx10-to-mx40-upgrade - MX10 to MX40 Upgrade
          permanent
        mx40-to-mx80-upgrade - MX40 to MX80 Upgrade
          permanent

    Not sure what to think.

It looks like a trail license of some sort was originally installed.  Check your account in the license manager to see if there is a record of a permanent version of that license.  I would suspect a trail one was applied here and the permanent one not bothered with after the other upgrades were applied.

If the license is not in your portal, I would open "admin service" ticket in the case manager and give them your license and chassis details.  Hopefully there is a permanent license on file from that first upgrade process that can be found.

It seems that the "mx5-to-mx10-upgrade" license is not a permanent one (means 30 day trial license), as you can see below that this one was not installed.

As Steve already suggested, please check if you have a permanent license for this. Please check with Juniper (License Portal or direct Juniper Admin case) if such a license is existing. You can check with your supplier as well if there is any.

If not, you have to buy this "mx5-to-mx10-upgrade" license to be a permanent one.
