I'm having trouble finding official juniper documentation to how many IPV4 routes a MX5 and MX10 and hold.

It used to be on the technical spec page under each device but I can't seem to find it anymore.

Can someone provide a link to the official doco that has this info?

see if this helps. Those will hold more than the srx and the ex which can more than handle the full internet routing table

    looks like 2.4M

Thanks, but is there any official doco on juniper.net?

I'm sure it used to be there, the EX switches show the info and it is far more relevent on routerts.

    Hi,

This is a document from Juniper Networks about MX Routers:

    root@mx# set routing-options maximum-prefixes ?
    Possible completions:
<limit> Maximum number of prefixes (1..4294967295)
log-interval Minimum interval between log messages (5..86400 seconds)
    log-only Generate warning messages only
threshold Percentage of limit at which to start generating warnings

Dont' know what the official limits are but pushing up over 2 million on them is "living on the edge" in my opinion.  Also, the churn from routing protocols can get very slow (ie. BGP) if you have significant events occur when you are running larger routing tables.   Our largest routing tables on MX5/10/40/80 is 1.8 million approximately IPv4 and 100k or so IPv6.

They are great boxes - just remember the RE on them is not overly powerful though....

    MX5 - MX80 FIB Capacity:

    • 1M (IPv4)
    • 700k(IPv6)

    MX104 FIB Capacity:

    • 1.8M (IPv4)
    • 1M(IPv6)

    Hello mueller,

Can you share where you found this information?

    Regards.

Hi , this depends on configuration , and linecards you are using.

    MPC 1, MPC2  - 5M

    MPC2-NG, MPC3-NG, MPC5 - 10M

Fib size for small MXs was in previous messages.

Also , fib size depends on your configuration. (indirect-nexthop, composite-nexthop, what is set in network-services) and other ....

    Hello Mueller,

Thank you for those numbers, I see that those numbers are very close as I see 14,66,000 routes and that shows 86% memory utilisation. For 100% it would match the numbers you quoted. Can you please help me with a link to the documentation which shows this?

    Appreciate your help...

    Hello Luca,

As far as I know, the RIB/FIB Limit is as follows:

    MX80:
    RIBv4: 4M

    RIBv6: N/A

    FIBv4: 1M

    FIBv6: 700K

    MX104:
    RIBv4: 4M

    RIBv6: 3M

    FIBv4: 1.8M

    FIBv6: 1M

Please note these values are only valid if you use IPv4 or IPv6. If you use both protocols, the values decrease as both protocols use the Router's resources.

MX80 has not enough memory to work fine with more than 2 full Routing Tables (e.g. 1x IPv4 and 1x IPv6). MX104 has 1 GB  more memory than MX80 and still can handle it.
