Virtual-Chassis using Preprovisioned or Nonpreprovisioned

  • 1.  Virtual-Chassis using Preprovisioned or Nonpreprovisioned

    Hi guys,

I have been configured the VC in the EX4200 and I am using the preprovisioned setup. During the configuration, I have defined the master and member (only two switches) using the serial number and both are configured to RE role.

During the tests, when I pull out the power cable from the Master, the function is transferring to the member. When the Master has turned on again, it does not take over the Master role in the VC.

This behavior is happening because of the preprovisioned setup or it is expected behavior?

Any suggest, please let me know.

    Tks,

You are correct that is the expected behavior .  The old master will not preempt the active master role.

    Hi,

Preempt is not enabled by default so this is expected behaviour for pre-provisioned VC.

If you configure your VC with mastership-priority then the original master will take over post reboot.

    [edit virtual-chassis]
    user@switch# set member 0 mastership-priority 255

    Hi avishm

The mastership priority is available in the VC configuration, but when I going to commit the configuration, I got an error.

    'member 0'
Can't have mastership priority configuration with preprovisioned set
    error: configuration check-out failed

In the preprovisioned mode, I can't set the priority in the members, this error is because of the software version running in the EX4200? The software version is 12.3R6.6.

    Hi Thiago,

You cannot configure mastership priority in a pre-provisioned VC.

You have to choose to configure either mastership-priority or pre-provisioning.

Mastership priority on a pre-provisioned configuration is not allowed.
