    Hello,

    Sorry for posting again a thread about EX3400 switches upgrade path but I'm trying to have the smallest amount of jumps from version 15.1X53 to 20.4R2.

    So, I'm wondering if I must do:

    15.1X53 -> 17.1R1 -> 18.1R1 -> 19.1R1 -> 20.4R2

    Thanks a lot for your feedback,
    Catalin

    Hello Catalin,

    the officially supported way would be:
    15.1X53 --> 18.2 --> 18.4 --> 19.2 --> 19.4 --> 20.2

    Since 15.1 every JUNOS release is considered as EEOL, 18.2 is EEOL, 18.3 is EEOL, 18.4 is EEOL too.

    However, there is a good chance that even a direct upgrade from 15.1X53 to 20.2 can work, but this always depends on your config (20.3 or 20.4 is not released yet for EX3400).
    As always, if you are running a mission critical network, copy your config to an EX3400 in your lab and check if an upgrade from 15.1X53 to 20.2 works.
    Please note that it is not recommended to install the last and greatest release, as it is the most unstable release as well.

    Juniper officially suggests Junos 18.2R3-S<latest> for EX3400, but newer releases eg. 18.4 or some 19 releases will work as well nowadays.

    Hello F1ght3r,

    Many thanks for your quick reply. The latest version to upgrade on CLI is 20.2R2 when searching on https://support.juniper.net/support/downloads/?f=ex

    I don't know why Juniper made it so complicated with EEOL, according to https://support.juniper.net/support/eol/software/junos/
    it's not clear.

    Why not implementing the logic in a small script to make life easier like other vendors do.

    Are you certain about this upgrade path?

    Thanks,
    Catalin

    Hi Catalin,

    yes, you are right, 20.2 is the latest JUNOS for EX3400.
    Actually until JUNOS 19.4 it was quite easy, as every release was EEOL, as Juniper writes:

    15.1 Releases to 19.4 Releases:
    EOE date: The date thirty-six (36) months after first general availability date.
    EOL/EOS date: The date six (6) months after the EOE date.

    Starting with 20.1 there has been changed something, as 20.1 and 20.3 only have 24 months of software support. I'm not sure what this means currently.

    Yes, the upgrade path is correct, if you want it the official way. You can even read it here:
    https://www.juniper.net/documentation/en_US/junos/information-products/topic-collections/release-notes/20.2/topic-13073749.html#jd0e4210

    Man,

    So confusing, why making things simple when we can complicate them, of course.

    Extended End-of-Life (EEOL)  then on the table is EoS. Sometimes I'm surprised that technical people are not paying attention to details.

    Wondering where you see the logic from the table regarding "from Junos OS Release 19.3 to Release 20.1"

    I just want to understand.

    Thanks a lot for your time!

    You are officially allowed to jump two EEOL releases. If we consider 20.1 as EEOL (which I'm not sure about referencing the reduced support time) and as 19.3 and 19.4 are EEOL as well, it is logical that the supported jump path is 19.3 --> 20.1
