  • 1.  Extreme ELSM alternative to Juniper

    Hello Experts,
I am planning to remove extreme switches from one of the customer premises where they are using ELSM (a preoperatory protocol which keeps a track of individual L2 links & provides a failover in case of link of isses).

Since it is an L2 link, i am unsure how to address similar feature in Juniper switching.

BFD is not the solution as it will work on Layer 3 i guess.

    Would you pl help here?

You can check if RTG suits your requirements:

It does sound like the feature is similar to redundant ethernet that Avishm is pointing out where two physical links are done layer 2 and only one of the two is active at a time.

The other possibility is Link Aggregation or Aggregated ethernet.  This option multiple links are put into a bundle and used as a single link.  So here during active usage both links are in use but either link can fail and the connection is still up.

You will need to asses the external component where these switches plugged into as well to check if is a trunk or an actual a bonded interface. Based on what you are describing sound more like a redundant trunk function which is something that is supported on Juniper switches, not sure if all switches but is a very basic function and there are some limitations for example it is not supported on AE interfaces etc. So perhaps another option to consider and see if it matches your requirement.

I think link fault management LFM maybe what your looking for . Like a Cisco UDLP kinda thing.
