  • 1.  QFX5100 & EX4300 upgrade with NSSU question

    Posted 03-10-2021 04:32
    Hello colleagues,
I am planning to upgrade 10 QFX5100 switches VCF and 4 EX4300 switches VC using NSSU to minimize the outage as much as possible.
(previously we did that manually by dividing into half and rerouting traffic then upgrade each half and after join the VC, but it took a lot of time to plan and implement and outage during the reroute was sometime 30 sec)
and since I haven't used NSSU before, I got few questions:
    - Our current version is

18.1R3-S10.4 and planning to upgrade to the juniper TAC suggested one Junos 18.4R2, but checking NSSU allowed versions there is no NSSU to this suggested version, there is only NSSU to 18.4R3
So If I want to use NSSU I can not upgrade QFX5100 & EX4300  to the suggested version

Or maybe the question is not so clear and I need to clarify something?

The number of people on this forum that can explain the absence of official test results between two minor JUNOS versions is likely very small. JTAC would continue to be your best source of information. That said, I have never seen NSSU work successfully, and given that such a compatibility matrix even exists (showing a 20% success rate) explains why. You're probably better off scheduling a maintenance window and doing a proper upgrade.

    Thanks for the reply.
I agree, even Juniper Service MGMT couldn't clearly answer this question and couldn't clearly advice to use NSSU because of the many issues it has, so seems with legacy VC/VCF architecture we need to live with the manual upgrade every few years and the associated outage until it will be replaced by newer design (EVPN ...) or maybe another vendor which has no such issues.

I got them from Juniper service mgmt. who supports us.

But I guess, I saw them referenced in some Juniper documentation about NSSU as well.
