Optical ports not working

    Hello,

     

    I wonder if someone can help. We are experiencing issues with our optical ports between QFX5100 and EX4300 since we rebooted our EX4300 switch.

     

    On our EX4300 the switch port is showing as down when I look at the status and the physical port light is also off

    On the QFX5100 the light on the port is on but the “et” interface is down but instead it is showing that port as multiple xe interfaces and showing them as up

    Hello,

     

    from your output I can't see which type of QSFP you have installed, your QFX discovers the transceiver as a 4x10G (PSM) interface.

    You can try to take out the physical transceiver and insert them again. Additionally, you can try to configure "set chassis fpc <fpc-number> pic <pic-number> port <port number> channel-speed disable-auto-speed-detection"

    I have an issue with some EX2300 series images  where the optical ports allow trafic, but the led stay off. still have to  try int on the new image 18.2R3S2.7.

    The traffic goes through, though.

    @LapointeMichel that known EX2300 situation is resolved in a number of different SW Releases, but the change is also in 18.2R3-S2, which is your best bet for SW for both EX2300 and EX3400.

     

    @jam as @F1ght3r said, it looks like on the QFX5100 side, it looks like the 40GE QSFP interface has been set to be 4 x 10GE channelized, which is one option for this interface.  You said this was working previously until you reset the EX4300, but I sort of find that hard to believe.  Show chassis hardware for both switches can tell us type of QSFP Optic being used, and as @F1ght3r said, change the config setting on QFX5100 via the command he/her listed and then see what show interface terse shows for the interface and if things start to look better.

    Thanks for your help. We have been having this issue for a while now where if we reboot our switches (for firmware upgrade) we not always get the optical interfaces back up. For that reason, have resorted to using DAC cables for the uplink. This only work for the switches which are in close proximity. We have quite a few EX4300 switches which uplink to our QFX5100. It may be that we are using old firmware (14.1X53-D27.3) on our QFX switch.

    Once this issue start happening, we have plugged and unplugged the transceivers at both ends, changed the ports and in some cases rebooted the switch but it doesn't come up.

    The interesting thing is that all the optical ports are showing as "QSFP+-40G-SR4". But all of others are up except this one.

    Is there anything configured under "show configuration chassis"? Please try to disable auto-channelization as someone has already suggested.

     

    "set chassis fpc <fpc-number> pic <pic-number> port <port number> channel-speed disable-auto-speed-detection"

    Hello,

    Thanks everyone for the help due to Christmas holidays wasn't able to look into the issue sooner. The following command as mentioned in the above post did fix the issue.

    "set chassis fpc <fpc-number> pic <pic-number> port <port number> channel-speed disable-auto-speed-detection"

    What concerns me is that why is autodetection feature not that robust. It was working and after reboot it randomly decides to channelize the 40gb ports.

    The auto-channelization feature actually depends on the data received on the interface to channelize it automatically. So whether the channelization is done or not may vary on the interface connection and if the data is received on the interface.
