A little background before I crack into it: I just started a new job, and my past experience was with cisco adtran etc. The last network engineer left the week I started here, so I don't have a lot of people around me for support on this. Right now I have 2 qfx set up on a pretty simple config.

I can see now that they both have different firmwares installed. If I want to set the 2 switches in a stack, I will need to upgrade the firmware. I'm wondering what I should pick from for their ios--install media or install package? It is a little bit confusing, right?

My overall goal is to set up both switches in a stack and have them uplink through the QSFP to SFP adapted for a 10g fiber uplink. Every port should be on vlan 70.

I have a question: should I worry about stacking them? Or should I just do a QSFP to QSFP link and just have it work that way? It seems like I'm closer to that right now anyway.

Any help would be hugely appreciated, so thank you. I was able to get it running this far from scratch, but this part is stumping me.

    Hi Jason,

Yes, you need to have same version on both switches for creating virtual-chassis(VC).

Virtual-chassis Fabric(VCF) is incorrect terminology in this case as VCF is spine and leaf topology and cannot be formed with just two devices.

Install package is copied to the device using SCP or by mounting USB and installed by command request system software add whereas install media is a bootable image to be loaded into USB and can be used as an emergency boot device. In your case, you should be able to use install package. for more info refer https://www.juniper.net/documentation/en_US/junos/topics/concept/understanding-junos-freebsd-package-naming.html

    >Prefix—This is junos-install. This prefix takes the place of the prefix jinstall and the bundle jbundle. We still use the term bundle in the new package-naming convention. Starting in Junos OS Release 15.1F3, PTX5000 and MX240, MX480, MX960, MX2010, and MX2020 routers run Junos OS with upgraded FreeBSD as a guest virtual machine (VM) on a Linux VM host. The installation package for these routers has the junos-vmhost-install prefix.
    >Media keyword—Added to the prefix, a media keyword is only used when the image is not for use with the request system software add command. Values for the media keyword include usb for images installed from a USB drive or net for images installed over a network; for example, the entire prefix of your package might be junos-install-usb-.

I would recommend you to build virtual-chassis by upgrading them to same version instead of using as standalone. VC has many advantages over standalone device.

ok so one more question i see that i can download directly to the switch witch is pretty cool. but i dont know what file to grab Install Media or Install Package and then im guessing also grab the  with Enhanced Automation  vs reg one?

You will need install package - install media is for USB installation during bootup. Install packages are for online upgrades/downgrades.

Just grab the image with enhanced automation which gives possibility to integrate with eg. VMware NSX (requires license) and similar.

Regarding upgrade; Please be advised that when you connect the two switches in a virtual chassis, only one of the configurations will survice - so port configuration from "slave" switch needs to be copied to master-switch in advance.

ok i can see home plate im almost there! but now that the next switch is in i cant change its config at all. if i try and do set interfaces i dont see any of the 1/0/x ports.

    root@Juniper-GrackSwtich-1135> show virtual-chassis status

    Preprovisioned Virtual Chassis
    Virtual Chassis ID: ae35.6205.942a
    Virtual Chassis Mode: Mixed

Member ID Status Serial No Model prio Role Mode Mode ID Interface

and if i do sho interfaces terse i can see the 1/0/0

but there all set to this .161386 subeterface and i can seam to find out how to change the configs on the xe-1/0/0 or any thing on that?

the main swtich is working still great but i just cant get the backup side for configering it all for the same vlan.

    THANKS!!!!

Turns out you then have to fully config them

    wildcard range set interfaces xe-1/0/[0-47].....
