  • 1.  TCAM usage on EX4600

Can someone explain to me tcam usage on the EX4600 platform?  I understand that the available tcam space is split between egress and ingress and how to calculate how much tcam space a particular filter is using.  What I don't get it why my total available tcam space goes up or down based on how many irb's I have defined.

    Hi lcroce,

TCAM dynamically allocates the minimum number of memory slices required to store the filters for a particular filter type, as needed. This documentation explains this for VLAN filters:

    https://www.juniper.net/documentation/en_US/junos13.1/topics/concept/filter-scalability-vfp-tcam-understanding.html#jd0e41

Let me know if that answers your query.

Also, some jargon you'll come across while checking filters for TCAM usage:

    • Port-based ACL (PACL): Ingress and egress
    • VLAN-based ACL (VACL): Ingress and egress
    • Router-based ACL (RACL): Ingress and egress
    • ACL entries (ACE)
    • Ingress filter processor (IFP)
    • Egress filter processor (EFP)
    • VLAN filter processor (VFP)

    Hope this helps.

    Regards,
    -r.
