EX4200 running 15.1R5.5 unable to install J-web due to low free space

  • 1.  EX4200 running 15.1R5.5 unable to install J-web due to low free space

    I successfully upgraded from 12.3R4 to 14.1Xxx to 15.1R5.5.

I wanted to also install J-web but it turns out there is not enough free space on root :

System storage is indeed low and I have no idea what to delete :

Has anyone been able to successfully get their EX2200 and EX4200 running on 15.1R5.5 AND with j-web 15.1R5.5 ?

If so, I'd appreciate some help.

    Thx

I don't believe you need to do the Jweb install on a ex4200.

My recollection is that since 11.4 this is build in and you can simply enable web management and start using Jweb.

    Hi Steve,

since 14.1X53-D10, J-Web is no longer bundled with Junos and needs to be installed separately. Only a very primitive J-Web Platfrom comes installed by defauly. In order to get the full funcitonality, one must install the J-Web Application package separately.

    *sigh*

I have figured it out by pure fluke. The correct package that will intall j-web on the current JTAC reccomended release of JunOS 15.1R5.5 is actually jweb-ex-app-15.1A3-signed.tgz and not jweb-15.1R5.5-signed.tgz which is linked from the download page !

So again, just install jweb-ex-app-15.1A3-signed.tgz and all is good.

Juniper should clarify that. Why is that package jweb-15.1R5.5-signed.tgz even available if it can't be installed anyway ?!

    Hi,

To have a proper web management working you have to follow below steps :

    > copy both packages under /var/tmp

    > request system software add no-validate /var/tmp/jweb-15.1R5.5-signed.tgz  (required by  jweb-ex-app-15.1A3-signed.tgz)

    > request system software add no-validate /var/tmp/jweb-ex-app-15.1A3-signed.tgz

    # set system servies web-management http (it's a hidden CLI , just copy/paste)

    Here we go :

    http://1.1.1.1 (Loopback Address)

Make sure there is no firewall filter blocking your http traffic towards the EX RE.

I's working fine for me on EX8208. very nice web interface.

I hope it helps. good luck.

    @adisor19 -

Do you have this package you could send to me? I cannot find Application package 15.1A3 anywhere on juniper site, just the Application package 15.1R46, which will not install on my EX4200 switches.

I downloaded the jweb-15.1R4.6-signed.tgz and attempted to install it, but I still have the issue of low free space. I also tried cleaning up the storage, but it didn't free up enough space. Any suggestions?

    Thanks.

From you description I assume you have run

    requests system storage cleanup

Also look at the home directories that may have files and /var/tmp for old software install files

If you can't get enough space that way, don't copy the file to the device but put it on a usb.

mount the usb to the switch

    https://kb.juniper.net/InfoCenter/index?page=content&id=KB12880

do not copy the file but  run the install from the mounted usb directory instead

    request system software add /var/tmp/usb/filename

Yes, I ran "request system storage cleanup".

Unfortunetly, attempting to install jweb from a usb stick did not work. There simply isn't enough space on the /dev/da0s1a filesystem for the jweb package. Below is the output from the attempted install.

root@juniper> request system software add /var/tmp/usb/jweb-15.1R4.6-signed.tgz

Is there a way to give the root partition more space, or to get the jweb package installed onto another partition that has enough free space?

Unfortunately you cannot change partition sizes these are controlled by the installers.

Did you exam the home and /var/tmp directory listings and confirm there are no user files that can be deleted?

Storage clean up will only act on Junos created files.

I did have an issue in some early 15 releases on the ACX where the partition created was too small.  This had an ACX specific PR assigned so may not be applicable here.  The solution was to upgrade to newer versions which did have an increased partition.

The /var/tmp folder has /dev/da0s3d mounted to it with 311M of free space. I have pasted the output of "df -h" from my ex4200 below:

This does look similar to the ACX issue I saw.  Your main system partition is basically full.  Verify that there are no user created files there that can be deleted.  If not, you will need to upgrade from an external boot.

You may want to open a JTAC case on this one for investigation.  This process worked for the ACX issue.

Create a bootable usb (you might just be able to do a snapshot to usb)

Boot to the usb and install the upgraded OS with the format option to the internal media

Thanks for the suggestion spuluka. Running the Junos from a USB stick would give me enough space to install and run JWeb. However, I have been unable to get a "request system snaphsot media external" command to complete successfully. The command succesfully partitions the USB drive, but somewhere along the process of copying file over to the USB, I start seeing errors. The system then seems to freeze and reboots. I typically see the following message in the console before things freeze and the box reboots:

    umass1: BBB reset failed, TIMEOUT
umass1: BBB bulk-in clear stall failed, TIMEOUT
umass1: BBB bulk-out clear stall failed, TIMEOUT

I have tried different versions of the Junos software, and three different USB drives. All fail with the same symptoms. I seem to be able to read files from a USB drive and install Junos versions from an USB drive. I'm guessing that I might have a bad USB port at this stage. For now I have reverted to Junos 12.3 as it has a fully featured JWeb interface on install.

Thanks again spuluka for your suggestions.

It might also be bad internal media which a format install may help.

You may want to open a JTAC case to verify the hardware at this point.

I have the same problem with a very similar df output. Any other ideas? I just upgraded to 15.1.

OK I see now. To download the correct J-web app (jweb-ex-app-15.1A3-signed.tgz), it is on a different page.

    1. Go to https://www.juniper.net/support/downloads/?p=jweb

    2.  Select ver 15.1.

    3. Download jweb-ex-app-15.1A3-signed.tgz

This file is different to jweb-15.1R4.6-signed.tgz

    For more information see:

    https://www.juniper.net/documentation/en_US/junos/information-products/pathway-pages/ex-series/pwp-ex-jweb-application-package-151A2.html>

For Junos OS Release 14.1X53-D10 and later, the J-Web interface is available in two packages:

    • Platform package—Provides basic features of J-Web and is installed as part of Junos OS.
    • Application package—Provides complete features of J-Web and is an installable package.
    • Platform Package
The Platform package of J-Web is installed as part of Junos OS that is shipped with your EX Series switch. The Platform package provides the basic features of the J-Web interface. The Platform package enables you to configure and maintain your switch.
    • Application Package
The Application package is not installed by default on your switch. You must download it and install it over the Platform package on your switch. The Application package provides all the features of the J-Web interface that enable you to configure, monitor, maintain, and troubleshoot your switch.

One more thing, I did not need a support contract to download J-web. However I did need to request access via JTAC by raising a Admin Service Request (License) request.
