  • 1.  QSFPP-4X10GE-LR @ 40Gb?

Can a QSFPP-4X10GE-LR optic operate as a single 40Gb interface? Or does it work only as 4x10Gb channelized?

    Hi Folks,

Based on my understanding QSFPP-4X10GE-LR QSFP+ 4x10GbE can be used as only 10GbE interface and not as a single 40GbE interface. You will need a 4X10G BREAKOUT cable to connect to the other end.

The below has few pointers on 10G-40G QSFPP Second Generation PTX Series PICs,

I actually believe the answer is yes, that it can support 40GE (via 4 x 10GE wavelengths) or be used with break-out cable. If you go to Pathfinder here - https://apps.juniper.net/hct/model/?component=QSFPP-4X10GE-LR&tab=sPlatforms and hover over the red "i" circles, the info appears to say that this transceiver can be used in either configuration.

The first question I might ask is, for which Platform are you planning to use this specific transceiver?

Sorry for the late response 🙂

This would be for a QFX10002-72Q. If I channelize this optic and use an MTP->LC breakout, will each channel run at 1310 so that I can use standard LR's on the other end?

Yes.  See here for specs - https://apps.juniper.net/hct/model/?component=QSFPP-4X10GE-LR

    From there it states:

Transmitter wavelengths (range).          1260 nm through 1355 nm (this is 1310)

All this info can be found on-line.

    HTH.  Regards.

Update: Unfortunately this optic (for some unknown reason to me!) is NOT certified for use on any QFX capable platform.  See here - https://apps.juniper.net/hct/model/?component=QSFPP-4X10GE-LR&tab=sPlatforms

At the same time, since all optics are standards based, the optic should/will work fine, and you can considered as you would as a 3rd party optics.  At least at the present time.

I will check further, and update if I find any additional info.

Oh, interesting. But I do see it here under a different name:

OK.  I suspect they each call out same Optic, but I'll check into it.  Thanks for the info.  Best for any QFX usage that you order JNP SKU if possible.

FYI Update - it turns in fact that the 2 x LR Optics are indeed NOT the exact same optic, and each has some slight spec differences, so in order for FULL OFFICIAL Support, only the JNP SKU should be used with QFX.

Do I think either will 'work', yes, but, . . .

    Again, just FYI.

This optics supports both the 40GE in 4 parallel single mode fiber (PSM4) link configuration and 10GBASE-LR IEEE Standard in 4xbreakout application.

To use this Optic in 4 x 10GE, one would need to go in and configure channelization of the interface.  Otherwise functions as 40GE (via 4 x 10GE parallel wavelengths).

    YES?
