    Hi there!

I'm looking for the best practice for upgrading SRX550HM cluster from 15.1X49-D30.3 to 19.4R3-S1 version as it's the The current recommended software according to this link below:
Junos Software Versions - Suggested Releases to Consider and Evaluate - Juniper Networks

It's the first time for me to do an upgrade, so I'm looking for useful tips and suggestions on how to proceed with the upgrade.

    Thanks.

    Hi,

Usually the best method i'm use is isolate one to one node coz it easy u want to fall back if facing issue after upgrade.

    Thanks

First you need to know that the maximum jump in major Junos version is 3.  You are looking to go 4 versions (the first number being the year that Junos was released).  So you will need to do a two step upgrade for this process.

Next you should review the release notes for your target version Junos 19.4.  Check what issues are being solved and review the open issues, limitations and changes in behavior closely.  Be sure there is nothing in these sections that will cause issues or require operational/configuration changes.

    https://www.juniper.net/documentation/en_US/junos/information-products/topic-collections/release-notes/19.4/topic-147487.html#acx-series-upgrade-downgrade

There are two methods of performing upgrades with SRX clusters that are discussed in these documents.  So you can review and choose whether to use ISSU or reboot both devices for minimal downtime.

ISSU can be non-service affecting but takes longer and if it goes wrong it can be complex and difficult in the recovery process.
The reboot method definitely has reboot length downtime but rarely experiences issues.

The third method mentioned by kronicklez is to
    • undo the cluster
    • upgrade only the active device (reboots with that downtime)
      • test and confirm no issues
        • If there are issue fail traffic to untouched partner and revert
        • No issues proceed with upgrade backup
      • reform the cluster
There is no Juniper documentation for this process.

    Hi,
I just found information that this upgrade is possible directly from 15.1X49 to 19.4R3 so it looks like that two step upgrade is not necessary:

    https://kb.juniper.net/InfoCenter/index?page=content&id=KB21476&actp=METADATA

Notes for upgrading from Junos 15.1X49 releases to 19.4R3 or 19.4R3 based Service Releases:

    • Junos OS upgrade from 15.1X49 directly to 19.4R3 or 19.4R3 based Service Releases is supported for all SRX platforms (ISSU is not supported).
