  • 1.  Recover SRX from snapshot on USB

    Posted 04-10-2019 08:40

    Hi all,

I have a SRX that is in the db> mode and it doesn't recover the partitions and take me to the logon prompt. I have a snapshot of a working device saved to a USB. I would like to instruct the corrupt Juniper SRX to boot from the snapshot in USB.

Could you please let me know how to do that ? Is it a straightforward thing like I just plug in the USB which has the working snapshot and reboot the device manually or I need to mention the boot source as USB somewhere in the db> prompt ?

    Please let me know ASAP.

    Thanking you.

    Regards,

    Pavan

Connect the USB and then reboot srx. It should boot from the USB if it has a working snapshot.

    Pavan,

    • Plug a USB drive into a known healthy SRX which is of the same model and configuration as the faulty device. Run the following command:

    >request system snapshot media usb

    • When the snapshot is complete, power down the faulty SRX. Remove the USB from the healthy SRX and plug it into the faulty SRX.

    • Power on the faulty device on and see if it will boot from the USB drive.

    • If it does, then snapshot the image from the USB drive back onto the compact flash (CF) with the following command:

    >request system snapshot media internal

This will load the image from the USB onto the SRX's internal compact flash.

    • Then reboot the device from the compact flash. Use the following command:

    >request system reboot media internal

Note: Taking a snapshot of the healthy device will also take a snapshot of the configuration, and will load the same configuration on the faulty device.

Also if you manage to get to loader prompt, you can try:

No the snapshots have to be from the same model of gear.

It is a good idea to take a usb snapshot for recovery after upgrades and have that available.

    Hi,
how can I create snapshots in claster of two SRX case?

I should use two USB devices - one for unit 0 and one for unit1?

    Thank you in advance.

There are subtle differences in configuration between the two nodes so I suppose ideally you would have one for each.

But in practice I think it is unlikely both would fail needing usb boot at the same time.  And a single usb would be able to get either node in condition to rejoin the cluster.

TVP platforms do not have the system snapshot option.

As SRX1500 is TVP, It will not have this option either.
